interference?

A1 is dribbling downcourt, as he passes by Team B bench, Team B coach reaches onto the court and slaps the ball away from A1. Where do I find the penalty?

Look under the section where it talks about unsporting behavior. Further guidance can be found in the penalty summary for direct technical fouls on the head coach, and in how many flagrant fouls a coach is allowed to have before he's disqualified.

Are you saying you'd toss the coach for this?

10-4-1 , commit an unsporting foul... 2 free throws and ball for division line throw in. I'll let the old head posters say WHA__ !

I'd consider it, but it's likely to depend on other circumstances; such as the overall atmosphere of the game, whether A1 was looking at a wide open layup, etc.

Has anyone seen anything like this in casebook? 10-4-1 is fine, but not specific enough!

Why do you need a specific casebook play to tell you it's unsporting for a coach to slap the ball away from a player?

I also agree this could easily be flagrant depending on circumstances.

Why do you need something more specific? Who do you need to convince that this is unsporting behavior?

jakem Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:43am

I don't need to convince anyone, I just like historical references!

Adam Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:55am

There's no case play because it doesn't happen. If you want to really hit them hard, you could get them for the following:

1. illegal substitution (not beckoned or reported).
2. illegal uniform
3. 6 players
4. adding a player (the coach) to the book

Unsporting makes more sense, though.

I've had it happen exactly once - boy's JV holiday tournament 6 or 7 years ago. Team A was up by 3 with about 1:30 left in the 4th. B1's shot misses, A1 gets the rebound and makes outlet pass to A2 near the sideline who turns and heads up court on a fast break. As he passed B's bench the coach reached out and slapped the ball away.

I tossed the coach...

That is exactly what I thought should have been done when I saw it happen!

Mark Padgett Tue Jan 19, 2010 12:19pm

I think an adequate penalty for this, since the coach slapped A1's ball away, would be for A1 to get to slap the coach's balls away. Turnabout is fair play.
