Game Mgt: Coaches???
Thoughts on this one?
Friday night, JV-G game. Home team winning 10+ pts in first half. Home Head coach (who is actually the Varsity Head Coach) is complaining to Official #1 and #2 about every call against Home team. Official #3 calls a shooting foul against the home team and home coach approaches Official #3 to talk. Official #3 asks the coach "What's going on, coach." She begins to explain and while doing so Official #1 walks across the court about 5 ft away from Official #3 and the coach and says "This is your warning, coach." Coach, waves her hand and yells "Get back over there. I'm talking to this guy!" This immediately gets some chuckles from the stands. Official #3 waits to see how Official #1 (R) handles this. Official #1 turns around and walks back to the C. 1. How should Official #1 or Official #3 have handled this? After half time the home team is up 15+ pts. Home coach is not questioning every call and has calmed down.. Later in the 3rd Quarter, Official #3 at the T, tableside ,hears the coach ask the table, "Hey what is the total foul count for both teams.....Not just this half but for the game." Official #3 runs up the court and comes back and the home coach says, "The foul count is 20-6...........the foul count is 20-6." Official #3 runs back up the court and comes back. This time the home coach says, "The foul count is 20-6, that's ridiculous". Official #3, T's her up. Home Asst Coach says "What did he do that for?" Home Coach says "Because I said the foul count was 20-6". She sits down. 2. How should Official #3 have handled this? After getting the seatbelt, Home Asst coach decides to stand continuously. Official #3 says to the standing coach, "You have to sit down." Home AC says "I don't have to sit down. She got the technical not ME!" Official #3 replies, "I'm not going to explain the rules to you, but you also have to take a seat." 3. How should Official #3 have handled this? Home team ended up winning by 15-20 pts. No more problems from the Home coaches after the T. And yes, I was one of the 3 officials.:D |
Sitch 1: IMO, this is unnecessary by Official #1. It doesn't appear that the conversation was inappropriate or demonstrative. Let Official #3 handle it.
Sitch 2: I don't have a problem with the T here. Sitch 3: I don't have a problem with letting the Asst. Coach know that they have to sit down. If they don't follow orders, WHACK.... |
Were you official #1, #2, or #3?

1. Official #1 should not have interjected herself into the coach's conversation with the coach.
2. Once she did, and the coach showed her up like that, she should have called the T. 3. Since she didn't, Official #3 could have done it. 4. Official #3 Td the coach about when I would have here. 5. I think the AC could have easily been assessed a T. I would have addressed the HC and informed her that her AC had not gained any new priveleges. Regardless, the AC's response could have drawn a T, but I wasn't there. |

She begins to explain and while doing so Official #1 walks across the court about 5 ft away from Official #3 and the coach and says "This is your warning, coach." Official #1 should have stayed out of the way. A warning is all well and good, but this wasn't the place to do it. Coach, waves her hand and yells "Get back over there. I'm talking to this guy!" This immediately gets some chuckles from the stands. Official #3 waits to see how Official #1 (R) handles this. Official #1 turns around and walks back to the C. In ANY OTHER SITUATION, when a coach tells me how or what to do anything, it's an easy T. Not so here because Official #3 stuck his/her nose somewhere it didn't belong (and while disrespectful, coach was right, this time). Others will say that HC should have been T'd anywys. I won't argue that point at all. #3 was being an OOO in this situation in my opinion. 1. The HC even admitted that he/she knew why they got the T. Pretty simple. Given how things had gone so far, I'd have handled it the same way here also. In any other game where the coach is respectfully asking, I might take 10 seconds or less to explain the situation to the asst. coach. |
Thanks for the input! I'm always trying to get better, especially with dealing with coaches.
I was Official #3. |
