Flopping
 

In NFHS is there a rule for FLOPPING, if so what is it and where is it in the rule book..

NFHS rule 10-3-6(f)--"faking being fouled". Note that the act is defined as having little or no contact. There also have been POE's issued re: flopping in the last few years.

This ain't new.
Back in my HS days, long time ago, early mid 70's my HS coach was a defensive specialist. We practiced "taking the charge", worked on our "ooofs, then landing and pushing with both hands to get the sliding backwards motion".. I got t'd up for taking a flop, ref stated "for inciting the official?"

I've only called this once, after a warning, in a 7th grade YMCA game. After the warning, the kid fell backwards when the dribbler was still 6 feet away from him. Typically, it's difficult to tell the difference between faking being fouled and leaning back to absorb contact.

I called this only once, and it was this year in a BV game.
As lead, I observed the defender obtain LGP. Driving the lane, the dribbler artfully changed his direction on his last step of his layup and missed the defender by a good two feet. The defender did the "AAAAIIIIGGGGHHHH!!!" and the flop, falling right below the rim where about three guys were landing after attempting a rebound.
"Tweet . . . T."
When explained to the coach, he chewed out his player for not at least making the guy's layup a challenge.
Was an obvious dangerous situation, where the flopper ended up. Had an ankle been broken on a similar play later, we'd have had a justifiably angry coach on our cases.
Nobody flopped the remaining three quarters of the game, though we did have several good blocking calls, as well as several player control foul calls.
Just another tool available when truly necessary.

When my son played in a rec league, we had a small point guard who would fake contact all the time (both offensively and defensively). I tried to talk him out of it, but it got to be a bad habit. He rarely if ever got the call.

Then, I started reffing his league as he got older and I would tell him - son, no flopping today or I'll be calling it.....

Now, he's 16, stopped playing ball, and I'm happy to say he's a petty darn good referee! Wonder what he'll do when he comes across it? :)

I think you mean their song "At The Hop" which had lyrics of "let's go to the hop". "Do The Flop" is the title of a song by a group called "Smut Peddlers". Not kidding.

Dang it! I actually warned a kid for this last night. 2-person, I'm T opposite in transition. W33 sets up defensively, with good position. Offensive player averts and pulls up for a jumper two feet early; W33 lets out the scream and falls backwards. On the way back down, I told him not to do that again.

Of course, he looked at me like he didn't know what I was talking about.
