10-4-1: Bench personnel.......shall not.....commit an unsporting foul......such as: b. attempting to influence an official's decision.

First possession of the game. Home coach says, "That's a foul."

Next possession. Same coach says, "Over the back!"

Start of second quarter. Home coach is relaxing in a nearby casino, having been ejected after the first two possessions.

Correct ruling?

You are kidding, right?

By rule, yes.

In my experience, by application, no.

Using a strict reading of the rule, it's a technical foul. And warnings before a techical foul aren't mentioned as being necessary in the book. However, most unsporting "T"S involve some judgment on the calling official's part. And every officials sets their own personal do-not-cross line.

This is why I tell them to "knock it off." And I feel no sympathy if they cannot handle me saying this to them.

But I'll play for the sake of those who might not see why we seldom have 2 T's here. It's official's judgment about whether the coach is trying to influence our decisions or is just expressing his opinion.

I make this judgment based on volume, persistence, and other dimensions of the coach's behavior. Ordinarily, a few comments do not violate the rule.

A warning is appropriate when it's not completely clear whether the coach's behavior violates the rule. After a certain amount of persistence, it becomes clear that a coach is attempting to influence an official's judgment, and a T should be called.

Here is my point of view on this situation:

First, I answer questions, not statements. Then, I use the following criteria:

1. Ignore (general verbal comments from coaches)

2. Acknowledged (questions not statements)

3. Warn (coaches that are screaming or becoming loud with statements about situations that have passed or even present situations)

4. Penalize (them for unsportsman like conduct that is the result of them not taking heed to my warning)

I think somebody was trying to be sarcastic, and I think that maybe that effort was lost on a few of us... :rolleyes:

He does have a point after all. If we're going to call a T for a player who removes a jersey as we're on our way off the floor after the final buzzer, we should probably make every effort to enforce all rules just as strict and as laid out for us by the NFHS rules committee. After all, we are all really just robots out there. I would also hope that we are equally as strict with coaches who place one foot outside of the coaching box and that we "T" accordingly...
