When Does the 10 Second Count Start?

10.8 says a player/team shall not be in continuous control of a ball which is in his/her backcourt for 10 seconds.

Scenario: A1 throws the ball into A2 in A's backcourt. A2 is being closely guarded by B2. The throw-in is not caught by either player but tips off of the hand of A1 and rolls away.

Is my assumption correct that I do not start my 10 second count until Team A secures the ball and establishes control?

How could A2 be closely guarded if s/he (a)didn't have control of the ball and/or (b) was in the backcourt (assuming other than NCAAW rules)? ;)

Bob,
I am thinking that he is using the term "closely guarded" to simply mean the defender was close to the opponent as opposed to the NFHS definition of said term.

I'm going to assume that Bob knew that as indicated by the smilie. I knew when I was typing that that it might come up.
