Time out vs Held Ball
Watching Purdue-Ohio State, and this play came up in the first half...
Loose ball in Purdue frontcourt, rolling toward the division line. Purdue player dives for it, and secures possession. A split second after that, an OSU player comes over and puts a hand on the ball. The Purdue player was requesting timeout and it was granted by the official. Hard to tell from the replay whether or not timeout was requested after the Purdue player secured the ball and before the OSU player got his hand on the ball. My question is, is one hand on the ball, as described above, good enough to force a held ball? Are there certain criteria that need to be met? Obviously this game is under NCAAM rules. Any differences between them and NFHS rules? |
One hand, two hands, it makes no difference.

Tony got it... but here's what has to be met:
4-25 A held ball occurs when: ART. 1...Opponents have their hands so firmly on the ball that control cannot be obtained without undue roughness. ART. 2...An opponent places his/her hand(s) on the ball and prevents an airborne player from throwing the ball or releasing it on a try. |

I suppose this would be hard to judge just how firmly each player has their hand on the ball though. |
