Thanks for the advice. I approached the game as if I knew nothing, and it went okay. The guy is a classic rec ball guy: comes dressed, not interested in much pre-game, spent nearly every free moment talking about himself and who he knows, hung out at the table during most time outs. But he called a decent game, and only left me hanging once or twice. I've had lots worse partners.
