Dead ball foul

Ran into this couple of times last week...

Partner administering throw in - after ball is in posession of thrower but before the throw in ends - a foul for a push in the back trying to get free occurs... isn't that a technical foul?

It seems a little harsh - but I assume it is a dead ball fould.

If the ball is in the hands of the thrower, it is not dead.

It would, indeed, be harsh.

Rule 6-1 LIVE BALL

ART. 2 . . . The ball becomes live when:
a. On a jump ball, the tossed ball leaves the referee' hand(s).
b. On a throw-in, it is at the disposal of the thrower.
c. On a free throw, it is at the disposal of the free thrower.

Why do people assume the ball is dead when the clock is stopped?

The first year I was officiating, I almost got tossed from a CYO tournament because a player on my daughter's team was called for a deadball T for pushing in the lineup during an inbounds play. I was sitting in the stands and said to the official (wearing an old collared officiating shirt) "ball is live". He yelled at me "No its not." I happened to have the rule book with me because as a first year official, I was reading it all the time. I pulled it out of my back pocket and calmly read the definition. He threatened to throw me out.

He doesn't referee CYO anymore. :D

While I agree he was wrong, I wouldn't recommend doing this to officials at any level. They're likely to either be right or obstinate. And 99% of the time, you'll come out looking poorly.

As a Catholic, I can say the parents in CYO are among the worst. As a young officials long ago it was quite ridiculous.

OH I absolutely agree with you. As a first year official, I had not, at that point, completed my transformation from Howler monkey fan to calm, cool, and collected official. :D

Ooh, in my past I have been a howler fan, parent, coach, asst coach, scoreboard op, scorebook person, etc. BAD, BAD ME! :(

(For some reason, when you put on the stripes, it all changes. Hmm?)

Not necessarily. The wife of a guy I used to work with frequently was a jr. high girls coach. When he was at her games as a spectator, he turned into a total nut job, screaming about "missed" traveling calls in the last 2 minutes of a blowout.

I can tell you for certain this individual would have had a difficult time getting games after behaving like this; if he was in my association (any association I've been in, actually). Word gets around quickly in our circles; especially with an official acting this unprofessionally.

Yep, this is certainly true in our area too.

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?

... It ended when you said goodbye.
