This is scary

I have a 5th grade girls "competitive" league game tonight. So far, I don't have a partner assigned. Yikes! I might have to work the game alone. I'm sure I'll get lots of help from the parents, though. I gotta remember to bring my ear muffs.

Of course, in this league, if I work the game alone I get an extra five bucks!!! Yippy skippy. :p

The advantage of working alone is you never have to ask "What was that call?"

Whoa - that was quick

Right after I made this post, I got notified that I have a partner for this game. It's a guy with whom I've worked rec league games for about 12 years. He's an older (and for me to consider someone "older", he's got to be ancient) retired guy and he still wears the collared shirt (he only has one shirt - it's the same one he's had all these years) with an old style loop lanyard. At least he uses a Fox 40. Oh yeah - he wears "Buddy Holly" glasses with a string (yes - a string) around the back.

All things said, he usually does a pretty good job and he's a really nice guy.

If the league will pay our travel expenses (first class airfare, limo service, first class hotel accomodations, and meals) plus our game fees and MTD, Jr., and I will come out and Junior will be your partner while I evaluate. :D

If you want to pay for all that on your debit card, I'll see to it you get a credit back to your account. Just email me your card number and PIN. Yeah, that'll happen. :D

Could be worse. They could be "Ray Charles" glasses. ;)

Well, I worked the game last night and guess what? My assigned partner had to cancel and I worked with someone else. It was the first time we've ever worked together. We got along OK.

Remember, this was 5th grade girls. In the first three minutes, we had six held balls. I thought maybe this league had a 30 second held ball clock.

After that, I asked the scorer to keep track of all the held balls, just for fun. At the end of the game, she told me there were 33. It seemed like even more than that.

Oh yeah - the final score was V17-H9. The best part was that there was no griping from either coach, except one time the home coach thought we had the possession arrow going the wrong way. He was wrong, of course.

Funny part - during a dead ball, one of the girls requested a timeout, then asked me if it was a full or 30. :)

I had a game early in my career at a small, religious school that traditionally fields pretty weak teams (being very kind here). G 7th grade game - my partner and I blew the whistle so often the first quarter I had a headache.

Guess the only silver lining was that when I went back later in the yr they had improved alot.

If I never have to go back there it'll be ok by me!

Ray Charles glasses would be awesome. You could look at the coaches and they wouldn't even know you're looking at them. You might not either...
