New 2-person mechanic... needed to switch!
Boys V game the other night. One team down 8 points or so with a couple of minutes to go, looking to foul. Not an uncommon scenario by any means.
Over the next 2 minutes I had 6 or 7 foul calls in a row, 4 against the same player! Team A inbounds, dribbles/passes to near division line, foul by B1. A1 goes to line, makes/misses, we go the other way, Team B looking to NOT foul, Team A with ball on rebound or after make dribbles/passes.... Rinse and repeat. It didn't dawn on me until later that my partner and I could/should have 'forced' a switch. Not that there was any problem with coaches. Everybody was on the same page about what was going on. No acrimony table side, just too much repetition -- too much ME reporting fouls. That is the first time all season where a deviation from the new mechanic seemed in order |
I was working a GJV game last night and got caught in a situation where I should've switched. My partner was doing his second ever high school game and was trying hard but struggling non the less. I ended up calling three fouls in a row and after the third one started to force a switch before the free throws when I saw his eyes get like saucers. Probably thinking, "Now what the &^*&^ is he doing," and decided I wouldn't do that to him now. He had enough on his mind :D.

lol, we've all been there once. :)
Forcing a switch, I think, can be done without inflicting any real trauma. Just hustle on over and say, "Trade me spots, will ya?" You can talk about why after the game. Assuming his head doesn't explode first. :D |
