Intentional Foul?

I have a question on a situation I seen at a Jr. High game. Following a timeout Team A is preparing to throw the ball in, but a foul is called against Team B before the ball is thrown in. Is this an intentional foul?

In of itself, a foul before the ball is throw-in is not an intentional foul

Check out 4-19.

I'm not sure if you are asking if it's an "automatic" intentional foul since the throw-in hadn't been complete or what.

Maybe you are referring to a defender crossing the boundary plane and fouling the player throwing in the ball. This is an intentional personal foul, plus a warning for delay of game is recorded.

The defender may not break the imaginary plane during a throwin until the ball has been released on a throw-in pass. If the defender breaks the imaginary plane during a throwin before the ball has been released on a throw-in pass, the defender’s team will receive a team warning, or if the team has already been warned for one of the four delay situations, this action would result in a team technical foul. If the defender contacts the ball after breaking the imaginary plane, it is a player technical foul and a team warning will be recorded. If the defender fouls the inbounding player after breaking the imaginary plane, it is an intentional personal foul, and a team warning will be recorded.

Not nearly enough information to answer.

What do you mean by "preparing to throw the ball in?" (Was A just lining up, or had the official given the inbounder tha ball?) What was the nature of the foul? (Who did what to whom and where?)

Yes, that is what I was asking. The ball had already been given to the inbounder and then a player from Team B was holding a Team A player to prevent him from getting open.

Judged by the same criteria as if it happened "during normal play."

Might or might not be intentional.

the ball is live so unless the foul is truely intentional it would only be a personal
