In the Marquette - Xavier holiday tournament game today, it appeared that one of the officials was wearing a HS jersey. There were no thick stripes down the sides. Also, he (and not the other two) had an American flag patch on his left sleeve.

I just thought it was a little odd.

Could have been a replacement ref. I've heard rumors that can happen.

Wasn't one of the officials Mr. Welmer? Looked like him and he kept hiking up his pants - my kids thought it was funny.

I notice he's already worked every day for two weeks straight. Man, that guy has some schedule!

There's no requirement that the college official wear the thick-striped shirt (but I agree that it would be better if they matched). I have heard that some assigners prefer the traditional.

It would also surprise me if I were watching NCAA Division I officials work a "big game" on television and they had any type of uniform issue: big belt buckle, jewelry, high school jersey, etc. In the case of the high school jersey, I would think to myself, did he pack the wrong jersey, or did his college jersey rip, or get stained, or something? Heck, it surprises me when I see a high school official "out of uniform". I'll never be on television, except maybe for "America's Most Wanted", yet, I always try to wear a neat, clean, and well kept uniform. And I always try to match my partner. If he forgot to pack his jacket, I won't wear mine.
