It’s easy to be nervous, but just relax and don’t second guess yourself during the game. You know what a foul looks like. Call ‘em like you see ‘em.

You must be doing pretty darn good to get a JV game so soon. Keep it up.

We usually have 30 new refs come out each year and maybe half will make it to a MS game which would be after two months of evaluations. It could take a few years to get a small varsity game. Very competitive here and senority plays a big part which it should. Have fun and stay sharp!
Well, I would really like to toot my own horn on this one, but it is more out of necessity, than my skill I think. Fortunate for me, but could be an unfortunate matter, is my area is always in badly need of refs, hence my JV assignment.

When we were in the meeting assigning games, they look at me and say, you should be ok doing the JV girls game. My style is to show confidence regardless if I really am or not . I am excited about the chance to ref on the varsity court though!

Like many, if not all of the refs here, say, important thing is having fun, and I really did have fun.

Kind of funny story about my first time out, I was standing on the scoring table side, waiting to start the 3rd quarter, my partner is at the opposite end fixing to administer the throw-in, and I look up at the score board and notice it is now off. I look at the other side (thinking that one would be on) and notice it is off. I make eye contact with my partner, and another official, who had his first games before me, touched me on my shoulder. I turn around, and the girls at the scorer table said, “boy you really do ignore the yelling.” Ha, I know I heard someone yelling at me, but I was focused on the game !

So I turn and say, yes, yes I do, and plugged in the score board back into the power supply. Good times.

Where I come from we have a word for when a new guy gets this kind of assignment.

"Opportunity"

Good luck. I'm sure you'll give it your best, and good things will come of it.
