The new issue (April 2000) of Referee Magazine arrived today and one statement cracked me up. On page 67, in an article about tossing the ball on a center jump it states, "Two of the more commonly accepted methods for tossing the ball are the one-handed toss and the two-handed toss."

I'd be curious to know what some of the LESS commonly accepted methods are. Does anyone out there toss the ball with their feet? Please let me know if it makes for a straighter toss and I'll try it.

I think there's a mechanics manual on some alien planet that recommends a three-handed toss, but I'm not sure.

BTW - for all you coaches out there, "gaffe" means "a blunder".

The writer must work for the national federation.

I've seen a couple references to Referee magazine in past posts.

How do I find out more about the magazine (related web sites, etc.). Can anyone provide info. on how to subscribe?

Also, note that in the same issue, they clarified / corrected John Katzler's play about putting the ball down in the free-throw circle.

There are some real inventive and novel ways of tossing.....in NY, some officials hold ball in one hand with elbow cocked back in shooting position, then in one motion bend knees and come up releasing the ball. Instead of standing facing the table the ref faces towards one of the baskets depending on whether he is righty or lefty.
