Backcourt Violation Technicality

I was taught this in my Basketball PE class more than 10 years ago by my school's basketball coach:

"In oder to establish yourself in the frontcourt, both your feet, and the ball, should cross the line."

He then proceeded to dribble the ball in the backcourt with both feet in the frontcourt, then stepped back in the backcourt. He said that was not a violation.

I showed the move yesterday to my buddies while waiting our turn in a pick-up game and they all cried violation.

Who's wrong? Who's right? Was I taught correctly by the coach, but the rule became outdated (remember, that was more than 10 years ago)?

Thank you.

The coach is right about a dribbler. All other inbounds players are in the front court if they have something in the FC and nothing in the BC.

Your coach was correct and the rule is the same today.

4-4-6
During a dribble from backcourt to frontcourt, the ball is in the
frontcourt when the ball and both feet of the dribbler touch the court entirely in
the frontcourt.

They must all be coaches. ;)

If they were running around like headless chickens while screaming "violation!", then that really would be true! :D

Substitute "howler monkeys" for "headless chickens" and I think you've got it. :D

If the move took ten seconds to demonstrate, it would be a violation.

Your coach was right, but even if you showed the rule to your buddies, they wouldn't believe you because:
1) They saw it called a violation once in middle school, or
2) It should be a violation, therefore it must be in the rules that way.

Snaqs, don't forget my favorite fanboy meme:

I don't care what the rule says, it's not fair and the referee should rule a violation anyways.

Nope, you got it right, and Chuck Norris would be proud that you didn't get pwned. Now someone set us up the bomb.

Not at all, and despite Snaq's veiled threat (or whatever the hell that was) I thought it was cool.

Welpe Tue Oct 13, 2009 02:09pm

OK, I understand now. Thank you. :)

I have a close family member who is a headless chicken. I find the comparison offensive.

Hey - the only good thing about headless chickens is that they can't wear face paint.

The face paint is used to paint a face on their breasts. :D

Mark and RUW, you guys must be awesome novelists in your other lives, the way you "tied the bow" on this one -- looped right back to the start.

Good morning, good afternoon, and good night.

Since when was being mean spirited an internet meme? :D

Well, being mean spirited can often lead to to interment, but it really needs to escalate first.

But to answer the question I think you meant to ask:
Since the internet was a glimmer in Al Gore's eye.

Wow, talk about a Freudian slip. I'm going to go read Rule 9 now and see if I can absorb that better than I type.

Wrong. It was a twinkle, not a glimmer. Let's get our facts straight.

Thank you

Thank you. I'm glad I was taught the correct rule. I'll show them this weekend *shakes fist* :D

BTW, sorry for the late reply. I was not getting an email saying someone responded to my post, so I thought no one replied. Gotta change that setting now.
