Ohio High School Certification Question

I am currently looking to become a certified OHSAA basketball official. I have a contact's number who is offering classes and i am looking foward to registering.

If anyone could provide a website or off the top of their head knowledge that would be great. Once you become certified (pass the class, mechanics test, etc.) what level are you able to officiate up to? If you can't officiate varsity right away (assumption), how long will it take to be able to officiate varsity?

...Just a side note question, I run a YMCA league and this kid, who is 18 (or so he says), claims to have officiated D II men's college basketball games, possible, if so how?

Thanks in advance, I have appreciated all the info I have gained from this sight already!

Only if he's from SoCal. :D

Inside joke. You'll get it after a while here.

When you pass the class and the exam, you will be a class 2 official, which qualifies you to work any sub-varsity level. After your second season, you can take the 2-to-1 test, which will make you a class 1 official and qualify you to work any HS level or below.

How quickly you get varsity games will depend on where in the state you are. Most areas you might start getting varsity girls games in your 4th or 5th season, and boys varsity a year after that.

Talk to your local assignors for more detailed info. A great deal depends on how many games you work, your age, your native talent and other features.

There's probably a DII college nearby, and he's worked men's rec/intramural ball there.

Ref DII at 18

Almost impossible. In my IAABO board(probably all IAABO boards but not sure) you can't get certified until you are 18. In order for an 18 year old to work college games the person would have to get certified in December and be working college games that same season.

I guess if his close relative was the assigner it could be possible....

Not that I disagree with you about being nearly impossible to be a DII referee that young. However there is no requirement to do even one high school game in order to work college. Not sure that it has happened where someone works college having never done high school but its not required.

It is rare but Ted Valentine being the most high profile example I know of.
