Silent Saturdays have been going on for some time in Youth Soccer. I think it started in the midwest somewhere. Our soccer association tried it last fall. Basically, the league was having trouble with parents and coaches. So they banned anyone from talking at all (no coaching, no cheering, no criticizing) for an entire day. The thought is that if you shut up the parents and coaches and tell them to just watch the game, they will realize that the players are just kids having fun and maybe the parents and coaches won't take it so seriously. That's the concept. I'm not sure if it works or not. Some people don't like it because the league has monitors at the games who will remove people and fine the club if any of the fans carry on. I've never heard of it for any other sport except soccer.
