But I decided this off-season to go to a couple of camps (I've dropped 40 pounds since January and will need to order all-new shirts just to go work these) and work a weekend or two on the courts instead of on the diamond.

I'm not sure what my motivation is, actually. My goal is to get down to about 180 pounds (I still have a ways to go (as I'm still a 38 waist and I think 180 will put me in about a 34) but WeightWatchers and exercise will get me there) for next basketball season and I'm thinking the pain-free running is the part I'll enjoy the most at this point. It won't be the coaches or the ragged rec-style basketball, etc.

Anyone else not work a lot of off-season stuff? I normally work about 35-40 games a season, all varsity, and usually don't see a court between March and November.

I don't really know why I started this thread -- just guess I haven't posted in a while and decided to drop by.

My new shirts arrived yesterday. I dropped 2 sizes in the mesh shirts from Purchase Officials Supplies. I ordered 2 different sizes and sent the bigger ones back this morning. I guess I'm ready to see how it all translates on the court.

It's hard to have a true weight goal considering we all have different body types. I do know my cholesterol has gone from 201 to 147 and I'm now completely off the BP meds I was put on 2 years ago. Now I look forward to my daily date with the elliptical machine and only occasionally have more than 1 beer when I'm out (last night was an exception, so I will try to get 2 sessions in on the machine today).

Right now I would love to work some summer/rec ball. I had to turn in my schedule toward the end of last season. Since August of last year I have been fighting a cardiac issue. Doctor's said I could officiate if I felt it possible but about the same time I came to the realization that my issue made it physically impossible for me to run up and down the court more than three times without a blow the doctor said no more physical activity until he said differently...not even golf while using a cart. Normally I attend three camps during the summer (last year just one, this summer apparently none) and work 20-30 games.

With the upcoming season being put more and more in jeopardy (at least another 6 months before getting the necessary blessing) I am beginning to think I have put on the stripes for the last time unless I wear them for Halloween.

Why don't you wear the scariest costume of all - a coach?

I'm one that doesn't work off season ball. My reasons include a philosophical reason. It seems to me that summer ball around here is way too ragged. It gets real rough and when I call fouls I catch grief from everybody including my partners. So I stay away, hasn't negatively affected me yet but I'm getting to the point where I may be hitting the glass ceiling due my no summer ball policy. I could live with the schedule I got last year for the rest of my officiating career. :)

Though I am going to a teaching camp in about 3 weeks put on by my local Assoc....

I stay in shape year round. Running, spin classes, weights, and I play tournament tennis from April to October. So by basketball season I'm in my usual fighting shape and ready to go.:D

I'm attending the IAABO school in Greeley, CO in June, but that'll be my only basketball officiating until November. I have club and HS soccer in the spring and fall, and then soccer tournaments throughout the summer.

With the exception of a couple of weeks off in between the sports during the school year ( and of course Christmas & spring breaks), I'm on the court or the pitch about 10 months out of the year. I get to ref soccer with my son, so I get the family time in as well, especially during the tourneys, we ref, the girls shop or hang out at the pool at the hotel...
