Play 1: can a player be ejected without technical foul called and shoot no fts?
Play 2: a1 goes to table after time out warning horn. Shooting 2 fts to resume play.Doesn't sub have to wait until clock has started to become legal sub at next dead ball? These plays are from a fellow official.

A player could commit a flagrant personal foul and he would not be assessed a technical, but would be ejected; however, there would be free throws resulting. If you had double flagrant personal fouls, then there would be no technical fouls nor free throws, and both players would be ejected.

The answer is no. The player can sub at the next substitution opportunity, which would be before the second free throw.

The restriction about waiting until the clock has started applies to a player who has been removed from the game and is wanting to check back in. He is not allowed to reenter the game until the first substitution opportunity after the clock has legally started. For example, if in your play A1 had come out of the game prior to the timeout being called, then he would not have been allowed to enter until the first substition opportunity AFTER the clock has legally started--regardless of when he tried to check in as a sub (before or after the warning horn, between free throws, or after the second free throw if successful).

Right. Now, if there was to be only ONE free-throw following the time-out, the sub would have to wait until the next dead ball. I believe the key, when a sub checks in after the warning horn, is that he must wait until the first dead ball following the next live ball. With two throws at the line, the ball is live during the first one and dead when that throw ends. So, he can then enter legally.

Right. I guess I didn't follow that explanation to the next step. Thanks for adding that clarification.

And the next dead ball could be right after the first (and only) free-throw, if it was good. I'm sure that's what you meant -- just didn't want anyone to get the mistaken impression that a player could *never* enter after just one free-throw if they checked in after the TO warning horn.
