2009 Final Four Officials

Who will get the call for this weekend? Will the ones that called last weekend be the ones that will be called to work this weekend?

I asked a similar question about "pool of available officials" in another thread and this is what BNR said:

Yes. The officials for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 come from the original 96 who worked the 1st round games.

Next week each region will have 9 officials working. 3 separate officials for each game: regional semi-final, regional semi-final, regional final. That means 36 officials will work next week and of those 9 will move on to work the National Semi's and Final.

JRutledge Tue Mar 31, 2009 10:50am

I do know of one official. I cannot speak for the others.

Peace

mbyron Tue Mar 31, 2009 11:02am

I have asked not to be considered for officiating the Final Four, since baseball season has started.

biz Wed Apr 01, 2009 07:47am

Might not mean anything anymore with Adams in charge now, but the last two years (2008, 2007) 5 of the 9 worked the Sweet Sixteen Round. In 2006 4 worked the Sweet 16.

Tim Higgins and Jim Burr worked the NIT Semis last night in NYC.

As did 3 officials from the Sweet 16.

refguy Wed Apr 01, 2009 09:11am

Based on performance so far, I think Tony Greene and Jamie Luckie are in.
Possibly Dick Cartmell, Mark Whitehead, Doug Shows, John Cahill, John Hughes.

Ch1town Wed Apr 01, 2009 09:15am

Dave Hall, Randy McCall & Verne Harris next Monday night.

Raymond Wed Apr 01, 2009 09:27am

Officials who have stood out to me are Jamie Luckie and Les Jones.

Tony Greene is about as steady as you can get so I wouldn't be surprised to see him there again.

Not going to have 3 West Coast guys on the game. Hall has worked 106 games this season...#1 for men's officials.

Especially since it will be 2 East coast teams competing... just wishful thinking I guess :)

tomegun Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:43am

Jamie Luckie is one of the best officials working. Once his name catches up with his ability he will be a final four regular. Les Jones is also solid and could get the call.

Rut, is it a secret or can you tell us?

Luckie is solid...works a crap load of big games all season.

jeffpea Wed Apr 01, 2009 01:06pm

I can confirm that JRut knows the Monday night crew.....

2 of the 3 officials from the Pitt/Vill game are working the FF....1 on Mon and 1 on Sat.

johnSandlin Wed Apr 01, 2009 01:16pm

Driscoll for Saturday and McCall for Monday would be my bet.

Don't ask him and Jeffpea shouldn't have posted names either.
It can only get those guys in trouble for someone to find out they let the word out. Jeff wasn't even supposed to know.

I dunno -- which one isn't east coast?

My college friends from Montana thought that Ohio was east coast, so maybe East Lansing would count as well!

Not really true. I just am not going to tell everyone here until an appropriate time.

biz Thu Apr 02, 2009 07:33am

If the West guys are getting plugs I'll plug a few East guys who I think should be working this weekend in Detroit.

John Cahill, Ed Corbett, and the aforementioned Jamie Luckie.

If global warming continues, Montana will be on the west coast.

In this part of the country, some people think that from Chicago on east is all one big continuous city and anything east of the Twin Cities is "east" in a cultural and geographical sense.

Of course, in NYC and other parts nearby, they think nothing west of the Hudson is important.

That's another friend: a Manhattanite once said to me (direct quote): "Lake Erie? That's out west by Colorado, isn't it?"

And according to "real" midwesterners (from big flat states) Ohio is not in the midwest either.

Go figure.

Nevadaref Thu Apr 02, 2009 06:21pm

Ed Corbett, John Hughes, and Mike Stephens are working the NIT Championship game tonight.

If the NCAA still has a regulation that Final Four officials cannot accept any assignments in the five days previous to their FF game, then these three are out.

Kind of a stupid rule. We have officials who worked every day from November 14 until December 24 but they can work on Thursday and then again on Wednesday. Supid.

I would have bet money of Corbett.

You make an excellent point. I believe that the NCAA should have such a rule in force all season.

My money is on Sirmons and/or Luckie. I still don't know which one of them made that call from the Lead to help out Mike Stephens in the MSU/KU game, but that guy is going IMO.

olddoc08 Fri Apr 03, 2009 07:25am

Shaw, Greene and O'Neil in the final. Mike Stewert is working a semi final

That would be Stuart.

Raymond Fri Apr 03, 2009 09:45am

So 6 of the officials would be:

Curtis Shaw
Tony Greene
Tom O'Neill
Pat Driscoll
Mike Stuart
Les Jones

????

Or is it still too early to ask that question?

biz Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:00am

if Cahill did not work the NIT final (which he didn't) I'll make him my "lock of the day."

I think he's been the best official in the country for the last 3 years.

GoodwillRef Fri Apr 03, 2009 11:30am

Rumor has it that Pat Driscoll will be working.

Since they are already in Detroit for meetings, you can add Thornley and Cahill to your list.

LOL!! That's a whole PAC 10 crew, that would be pretty cool. Thornley is working right now, so there's one from the PAC in the final 4

I've gotta ask. Is the identity of these guys something y'all were that anxious to find out?

GoodwillRef Mon Apr 06, 2009 06:46am

Tonight:

Curtis Shaw
Tom O'Neill
Tony Green/Vern Harris

Just my guess.

Officials Names

As long as I can remember CBS always used to show the officials names in the bottom left hand corner before the tip-off. I noticed this year that they didn't. I went out to sports bars a lot this year, and the volume would be turned down, so I could't hear the names all the time. That's one of the exciting things to do. Make sure you get in front of the tube before tip to see who's working the game. Congrats too all the officials who got a chance to work in March. No matter what level we officiate, we should all aspire to get our name called to work in March.
