Headband in the ASU/A&M game today

Watching the ASU/Texas A&M womens game today. Did anyone else notice the headband that Briann January (#20) for ASU was wearing?

It was a (from TV) a cloth headband with NIke Logo that clearly tied in the back with a knot... I thought it was strange and wondered if it was illegal...

So I went to the NCAA rule book and found that it meets the rule definition of

Art. 14. Any item that goes entirely around the head, such as headbands or haircontrol devices shall:
a. Be a single non-abrasive and unadorned item made of cloth, elastic, fiber,
soft leather, pliable plastic or rubber;
b. Be single solid-colored, similar to the dominant color of the game jersey,
white, black or (women) beige;
c. Be not wider than 2 inches;
d. Bear one manufacturer’s logo or one institutional logo/mascot that shall
meet the restrictions of Rule 3-6.1.a. These logos shall appear only once;

NFHS rules are similar

Nothing says it cannot have a knot or be sewed together... (we clearly allow pre-wrap to be tied in a knot,

so it made me think, if a player showed up with a single color bandana what would prevent that from being illegal (obviously it would need to meet color and logo requirements)

hate being the fashion police but clearly Nike sells these things... and thenthere is nothing about it being hemmed not ragged, etc... so any piece of cloth less than two inches wide that meets color and logo would be legal...

Could be a bandana if it is solid and less than two inches right?

I didn't see it. As far as the bandana, you might be able to claim that it's not a "solid" piece of fabric, since it's folded up. It's layered, not solid.

I think (personally) the bandana should be illegal, but I guess I don't have a real great reason for why it should be.

I did not see it either, but could it have been a concussion headband? Saw a handful of those this past season that were okayed through the state with doctor's notes.

Pardon my ignorance, what is a "concussion headband?"

forget the headband...I thought we discussed here earlier that long-sleeve undershirts were illegal per NCAA rules, but the kid from Oklahoma has been wearing one all tourney.

NCAA-M people is it illegal to wear a long-sleeve undershirt or not?

Apparently there must be some sort waiver that can be acquired. But per the rule book I believe NevadaRef posted that it is illegal.

One that is padded. Generally, a player who had received a concussion, or maybe more than one, will have one recommended by their doctor if they want to play.

Alrighty then. I checked online (duh), here's a link to one:

Protectective Sports Headbands reduces impacts to the head injuries and brain damage

I know a lot of soccer moms on the teams I coached would have liked to see these a few years ago. Wonder how effective they are?

Apparently they are effective. I performed a search, and was not able to find a single incidence of one of these special head bands being damaged from an impact. ;)
