Is there a doctor in the house?

HS JV rec this morning. Games are co-ed. Second game, middle of Q3, one of the girls gets hit really hard in the back of the head with a pass. She goes down but is not unconscious. We stop play immediately and her mom comes out of the stands. She waves for some guy to come out too. He gets down and looks at the girl, who is definitely disoriented. He pulls a little flashlight out of his coat pocket and checks her pupils. He says she seems to be OK and to go get her an ice pack. My partner asks the guy if he's sure she's OK. The guy gets this patronizing look on his face and says, "Yes, I'm sure. I'm a neurosurgeon." My partner steps back and replies, "Oh".

BTW - she was fine but did not return to the game.

"Oh, ok, you aren't wearing your hospital ID, and I didn't notice the distinctive neurosurgeon dick-ishness until you spoke. Thanks for your help!"

Or, "Yea, but I didn't know how much experience you have with cranial-contracouis-uvea-inflammation..."

With this kind of credential, he could have just as easily been a car mechanic or a termite inspector!

Had the opposite happen during little league years ago. A boy gets hit in the nose and is bleeding heavily as I come upon the scene at start telling the guy helping him what to do.........someone whispers to me "he's an ear, nose and throat doctor". I sit down and shutup.

What's the difference between doctors and God?

God doesn't think he's a doctor.

OK, Juulie, you can use "she's". ;)

I don't know what that means, but I like it. Consider it stolen! :D

It's 'contrecoup'. I'm sure that's what's confusing Jug. ;)

Now that's funny - I don't care who you are.

Had a HS game years ago where two guys on the same time smacked heads. Back of one head to the chin of the other. Both go down. Chin boy is bleeding and is OUT. We get coaches and trainers out there and they are taking care of everything. Two men come out of the stands and ask me if they can go out on the court to "help". I ask them who they are and the one says "I am Dr. so-and-so, the director of surgery at SW Washington Medical Center, and this is my Chief Surgeon who also happens to be that players father." They went and helped.:p

Why is this such a "joke"? The kids have fun, they get exercise and display good sportsmanship. That's what rec leagues are supposed to be about. The girls get to play through their senior year and the boys are all freshman and sophomores. They play V level rec after that.

About 3/4 of the girls that start as Freshmen stay all four years and virtually all the boys play all four years. Obviously, they don't think it's a "joke" and that's what counts.

Dude, don't sweat it. Some people need to put others down to feel better about themselves. Not everyone has good meds.

I'm surprise that no one ask this question.....

Who comes to games with flashlights?

Depends. People figure out very quickly that you're a doctor, so you end up being the unofficial team/league physician. I lost count of the number of injuries (on and off the field) I looked at during my son's little league years.

A lot of us bring some type of supplies or first aid kits to games.

But regarding the OP, who knows why neurosurgeons do what they do...:p

I am a volunteer firefighter and paramedic, I always have a FA kit with me and when I am on call I carry wear my responder belt to the gym.

I agree that people get to know you have the skills and will call you out often.

I had a similar experience in a football game. One of the dads (a former Division 1A football All-American) came down on the field and the coach (a father of another Division 1A football All-American, and a Big 8 All-Conference selection during his own college days, married to a former Olympian) said, "Doctor, can you take a look at this?" Without hesitation, the good doctor took a look at the kid. I felt in awe because all three are associated with the University of Nebraska. My white hat looked at me and said how often are we gonna stand on the same field with these three again???
