Crazy Championship Game
 

Working the boy's Regional Championship Game only the winner goes on to the state tourney. Visitors are up 8 at half but home team comes back and is leading as some starters are on the bench with 3 fouls.

By mid 4th quarter they are down by 8. I am L opposite table. Point guard is bringing the ball up the floor and tries to stop and slips in front of their bench. Partner calls a violation. As my partner goes to check to see if there is water that caused the player to slip, the player slams his hands on the floor and came after me 35 feet away on the opposite side of the floor.

He starts swearing at me saying I cost them the game. Whack! He keeps coming at me swears again, gets in my face, and makes contact. Whack again! I said, "Your done."

I knew the kid well and had never had a negative interaction with him before. Absolutely crazy. A senior leader for the team but certainly didn't lead in this case. The tournament director said he couldn't believe how calm I was. I said maybe because it took me all by surprise.

Anyone else have any crazy blowups like this?

You must have jumped up and broke his backboard.

That's why I stopped dunking in uniform.

Okay, that's a lie. I never stopped.

Tourney would have been over if the backboard broke. Sad part was, I had nothing to do with the call and hadn't been watching the ball. There was some confusion about something, fans thought there were six players on the floor that wasn't discovered. I counted quickly and only had 10 on the floor.
