What kind of whistle do you use?

My intramural league gave us Fox 40 Pearl's for free, so I used that all season. One of the guys also does high school ball, and he used a Fox 40 Classic.

Do you go with Pearl, Classic, or something else?

Fox 40 Classic all the way.

The Pearl sounds like a train whistle.

FBullock Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:16pm

Primarily the Classic but I do care the Dolphin in case the other folks on the crew want to use that. Want all our whistles to sound the same.

Why?

DadofTwins Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:19pm

I saw a women's NCAA game recently where the referees used matching pink whistles.

mtn335 Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:34pm

Classic for me, but I'm curious about the Dolphin, can anybody tell he about it?

As for the pink whistles--http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/preps/2009/01/07/pink_whistles_coming_to_a_court_near_you

That's about officials in King County (Seattle), WA, but we did the same thing in Snohomish County (Everett) WA, as did lots of collegiate and HS officiating groups around the country. Great thing.

Dad--are you the same guy as on the Jeopardy forums? I go by GonzagaNathan there.

Mark Padgett Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:37pm

I use this:

JRutledge Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:44pm

Fox 40 Classic all the way.

Peace

DonInKansas Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:49pm

Fox 40 Classic. Bought a pink whistle but didn't have a game that week.

Jimmie24 Wed Mar 11, 2009 03:56pm

Whistle? Why use a whistle? It slows the game down by stopping the clock.

Same for me, first year with pink whistle and no HS girls games to call that week!

The Classic for me, but I did work some youth games 2 weeks ago, in a small out in the country school, with a partner (1st year) who showed up late, apologized- saying he lost his whistle and had stopped at a local dept store to buy one.
The funny thing was, the only whistle available was a kids one from the toy dept- blue and oversized! I'm still smiling over That sound!!

At least he did not have to buy a case of Cracker Jack.

I think we had a paid dolphin afficianado around here for a while, but I could be wrong.

I use a classic; used to have a mini (and didn't realize it) until the partner in my first varsity game informed me afterwards that he had a hard time hearing my whistles.

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Wed Mar 11, 2009 08:18pm

I was probably one of the last basketball officials in the country to go to a Fox; I didn't like how the Classic felt in my mouth and stayed with the Acme Thunderer unitl Fox came out with the Pearl and I then changed to the Pearl. Eventually, I went to the Fox, but when the Dolfin came out I switched to it and think it is the best. I still use the Pearl in very small gyms and I would use it to bring order to chaos in a classroom when I use to substitute teach, :D.

zm1283 Wed Mar 11, 2009 08:42pm

I have two Mini's and a Classic. I switch back and forth. Can't tell the difference as far as loudness goes.

JugglingReferee Wed Mar 11, 2009 08:45pm

Fox 40 with Cushion Mouth Guard.

SAK Wed Mar 11, 2009 09:12pm

Fox 40 or Dolphin. I like the dolphin, it sounds very much like the 40 classic but its louder.

I have used Pink and blue fox 40's. We were using them for the games the last week in January for Coaches V. Cancer. The whistles were free but they were asking for a donation of one game check, or what ever you could give.

shavano Wed Mar 11, 2009 09:53pm

Fox 40 CMG for both sports :) Have the varying colors for soccer....

refnrev Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:07pm

Add one more the to 40 CMG crowd for basketball; for volleyball its a Mini CMG, and for soccer a 40 classic. Just don't know why anyone would use anything else.

eyezen Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:16pm

40 mini CMG

Neither could I, but my partner could. :)

shishstripes Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:17pm

In our smaller gyms I use Fox40-mini CMG but when I know it will be louder or I am in a larger facility in the city, I go with a Classic CMG.

budjones05 Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:34pm

For camps, or places where there are more than one game going on, I use a Fox Pearl.

Anything else, I use a Fox CMG

That's probably why they give us the Pearl then. When we have a full night, 8 games are going on at once

tjones1 Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:47pm

Fox40 Classic.

I can't seem to stay away. I must be addicted, but I've given up soda for lent and I'm not about to let go of another vice until I get past the shakes.

grunewar Thu Mar 12, 2009 05:07am

Chiming in.....

I use the Fox 40 Classic and the Mini also.......both with mouth guard.

Our Rec League distributes free shirts and whistles to our new refs annually. They got those playground, big-kid whistles and thick nylon lanyards. The whistle sound like something a traffic cop uses (not that there's anything wrong with that). I usually take a few for my bag in case anyone forgets to bring one to a game during the yr.

BillyMac Thu Mar 12, 2009 06:34am

When In My Little Part Of Connecticut ...

Evaluators suggested that I switch from a Fox Mini to a Fox Classic at the beginning of the season. It took a few games to get use to the larger size, but people say that I've got a big mouth, so I adjusted easily.

Many associations participated in Blow the Whistle on Cancer. Contributions to the American Cancer Society got you a pink [or white] whistle to use during a designated time period which was usually one week.

We have a supersectional game in Illinois on St Paddy's day, I know two of the crew, would love to give them green whistles........which of course they wouldn't use.

Being Canadian, I know the Fox owners personally and I've heard on good authority that the next colours are found here:

They don't still use penalty horns in Canada, do they? :p

I'm going to have a hard time getting into basketball. I have tried using a Fox 40 classic for football but can't stand the high pitched shrill tone and much prefer my Acme Thunderer. I doubt I can get away with using it in basketbal though. :D

kda89508 Thu Mar 12, 2009 04:25pm

Dolfin for now.

I use the Dolfin for now but hope to use the updated Sonik when they get it right. I will let you all know if the next Sonik I get is better than the last 2. If you look on their website at Fox 40 you will see that they have came out with a fingergrip Sonik and it looks different from the 1st and 2nd batch of Soniks. As I have stated in my past post I am testing the Sonik for Fox 40 and do not get paid for it. I will let you know if the updated Sonik is better than the last 2 versions. For now I would use either the Classic, Mini, Or Dolfin. If some of you have the OLD Mini Fox 40 it was not very good when they 1st come out but then they updated it and now they are VERY CLOSE to the same. THANKS! Kevin :D

One and the same. Be very glad there aren't two of me. ;)

If memory serves, there are a couple more Jeopardy Boardies lurking around here.
