The Ides of March is March 15 in the Roman calendar, is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BC.

So, which official do you think will be verbally "assassinated" by an ill informed announcer?

The Eyes of March ARE upon us. That would be the correct usage. But it might be confusing if other dates than March 15th are included for discussion when using "Ides".
