YouTube - Duke's Scheyer Mugged; Haters Only See Traveling

Wow, pretty funny.

bas2456 Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:04pm

I only saw two travels...but nonetheless, ridiculous. Search youtube for Duke travel and you'll find a couple other videos with even more ridiculous examples.

JugglingReferee Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:06pm

They're little travels, with only smidgens of an advantage. At that level, no-call it.

I hope you forgot the 'tic' next to your comment. Big advantage gained as it was at the end of a tight ball game and VT needed the ball badly.

I never joke when I use the word smidgens. :p

I guess the OP is a hater. According to the video title, you either see a mugging or a travel.

You only see mugging if you are the type to yell "get him off of him" when a defender gets within 2 feet of the guy with the ball.

Like many of the people in HS games do when in the stands, on the bench, etc.

Rich, do you really think that I would limit myself to the options presented in a YouTube video?

Nah, I was referring to the types that would post and comment on such a video. :D

There was only 2 travels in that video, I played it back over and over. But, there should have been a 5 second closely guarded violation.

If I looked at the video correctly, Duke was in their backcourt when it happend. Correct me if I'm wrong.

IREFU2 Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:00am

Ops, you are right...my mistake. I do women's basketball, so my mind is on that side of the game. But, he did travel......

Ref Ump Welsch Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:05am

No problem, you're forgiven! But I do agree, this was travelling. Heck, he even traveled into the trap!

TussAgee11 Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:11am

Difficult play to referee. Had to referee two defensive players both swiping at the ball.

The Duke hating is ridiculous - I could go back in that game and give you a few examples where you could make the case the other way. But of course, ESPN just focuses its attention on when Duke gets the call. Same thing happened the other night at Maryland.

Anyways, Duke is a well coached fundamentally sound team. They play great help defense. They have a great spread on offense. They have a variety of different types of players. Good teams get close calls, because most of the time the close call SHOULD go there way because they do that little bit extra that the other team doesn't.

Anyone else with me on this?

No doubt that Coach K is one of the best in the game. Duke will be a perennial title contender under him.

sallender Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:17am

I have to disagree!

I think Duke gets more than their fair share of calls.

If you've every watched Shewsiwhewski berate officials, his lips constantly appear to use the "f" word. It always happens whenever one of his boys gets ruffed up a little. You can bet the next 10 calls will go in favor of them.

And to think ESPN showed one time this season the "BIAS that is DUKE" is amazing....;)

IREFU2 Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:26am

I have to agree with Sallender, when they are winning everything is all good, but when the games is tight and Coack K tries to work his magic and starts working the officials. IMO, the best way to referee this play is from the baseline, where ther camera was. So many times I have seen trail officials even or ahead of the play. Thats one thing I have been working on this year is trailing the play so I can pick these types of violations.

YouTube - Flagrant Elbow - No Call; No Review; No Outrage

This is why its annoying. Nobody will ever pay any attention to this and it will just go down as "Duke is a bunch of wusses."

On the pick earlier in the week vs. Maryland, we had a pretty good debate on whether it was clean or not.

The point is, the first words out of everyone's mouth are "WHAT A GREAT PICK. HE LAID HIM OUT!" If the Duke player sets that pick, it's "WHAT A DIRTY PLAY! SUSPENSION!"

The officials should just call the game, which is what they do at that level. From an officiating standpoint, that is the best thing I can take away from all this. Just referee. By and large, the officials at the NCAA level do a great job calling an ever changing game. The close calls in every game - fans see what they want to see. And since 95% of them hate Duke, you can see where the real bias is!

Done!

Coach K

Great coach! But, but I lost some respect for him last year, when I heard him drop the F bomb a few times during an interview and with players during a time out. Also, this hit home a little more, is when he visited my sons HS on a recruiting visit. It was a Saturday morning practice and all the kids (HS players) were excited to meet Coach K. Even the freshman team showed up just to meet Coach K. He was polite but refused to have pictures taken with the kids and gave them a hard time about signing autographs. The kids were disappointed in his visit. Now when, Coach Williams(UNC)came to visit, he sat with the kids, engaged with them, took pictures and looked liked he was having as much fun as these high school kids were. Duke's a great school and Coach K a great coach, just a little more guarded in public, which I can appreciate.

Not possible. After 1 travel, the ball would be dead, and the player could walk all he wanted.

Since the official in the video did not call a travel, there were in fact 0 travels in the video.

It is possible, since he missed the first travel, then a second one occurred, which in fact was missed as well. 1+1=2...

That is awesome that you know what "everyone" says and it is always the exact same thing, because "everyone" is incapable of objectivity.

Except for you. I guess?

I find it ironic when people make these kinds of arguments where they are complaining about how "EVERYONE" is unfair to their particular group. Irony much?
