Worst officials (unofficial survey)
 

ESPN's Page 2 ran a "State of Sports" survey, where fans answered 50 multiple choice questions about their sports preferences, etc. Obviously an unscientific survey, but here's one of the questions:

40) Which sport do you think has the worst officiating?

44.7% NBA
24.5% NFL
12.5% College basketball
10.8% College football
4.9% Major League Baseball
2.7% NHL

A. Basketball

Actually, I think it's soccer. People leave soccer games in ambulances.

Just to be fair, perhaps I should change "worst" to "least knowledgeable about rules" and change "fans" to "coaches"?

You never hear him say "one hundred and twenty" when it really was "one hundred and eighty". :p

The NBA has a had a rash of negative publicity with their officials lately.
The NFL is the most watched.

I think M&M is full of crap, and polls are great.

10.8% College football

From the games that I see, these guys seem to struggle the most.

No kidding. I'm pretty critical of NFL referees (I think that's more the NFL itself than the referees to be honest), but college football is worse.

Finally, a thread where your skill set is useful.

That doesn't need a poll. We've verified over and over again that it's clearly undeniably obvious that college basketball wins this title! :p

Not only "fans" but the announcers both radio and TV don't understand the rules either and they are telling their listeners and viewers that we are wrong on a call......

Not that a magazine or sports show would ever do it
but it would be interesting to compare the fans perceptions to
the evaluations of the officials - and publish that information.

It would be interesting to see - I think that people would be surprised at how little they actually know - well no they wouldn't believe the published data.

I had a blow out game last night where both coaches knew it was not going to be all that competative. They were playing their benches alot and as suspected the score was lobsided right off. Fans could not understand and kept looking for every single ticky tack call. All along I was thinking what would Mark do here!

At half I told each coach I was going to have some fun and show the "parents" what they were doing was wrong. The ball was inbounded to start the half and I went and sat in the stands next to the loudest person, Ohh yea I knew who it was. One parent who knew me from previous games asked what I was doing.

My reply "Well it is apparent from the first half that this is the best seat in the gym to make every single call correctly so I thought I may as well just join in." The Dad looks over, hangs his head and just says rather embarrassed, "Point Taken, I'm Sorry."

Never heard a word for the rest of the game.

My opinion of polls is correct, but I am still full of crap. :D

We could take a poll on whether or not M&M is full of crap.

Even with Billy Packer out? I don't know... I've heard some really, really bad NBA and WNBA announcers... and Clark Kellogg has broguth the college level way up.

I think the worst officials are HS softball umpires. You know, the ones who smile and wave goodbye to you after their game, and my baseball game is still in the 4th inning, at the same pay rate! lol ;);)

This survey shows that not a lot of people watch hockey.

A survey was not required for that information.
