Going POI is a relatively recent change. I think you went to the arrow as recently as 2 years ago.
The "point of interruption" has been in the rulebook as long as I've officiated. It's always been a part of the correctable error rule. However, it was introduced as a formal definition and used for double fouls prior to the '05-'06 season. So the double foul rule changed 3 years ago.

To be fair, sometimes the POI really is the arrow.
To be even more fair, the POI often, maybe usually, is the arrow. But they're not equivalent.

POI is rarely the arrow. (ie: double T after a held ball).

You would also go to the arrow as the POI after a double foul during rebounding action before team control is re-established or after a double foul when there is no team control after a throw-in has ended.
