Some observations from tonight’s B&G varsity league tournament games…
We never get 3 man crews in our D4 league until the 3 game post season tournament (#1 plays #4, #2 plays #3, 1st place game tomorrow, no 3rd & 4th place game). So this means that the referees rarely work in 3 man. To me it was obvious that a lot more foul calls were made, and they were all good calls, a number of which would have likely been missed in the usual 2 man. Still, only 2 kids fouled out in 4 games. It was called the way a game should be called I thought. I though they did a great job overall, with the lone exception of one individual who doesn’t seem to understand it isn’t about him. Or he never played the game so he doesn’t get it that players can be upset because they made a mistake but it isn’t automatically about him.
At about 10 minutes before tip off, “MrT” tells the coach’s he’s going to have a “pre game talk” with them. I’m the JV coach and not coaching in this game, but I had been talking to my V head coach on the edge of the court and I stayed there and listened to the pre game talk. In his speech, there’s some good stuff and there was this, “This is my game, and I’m not going to put up with any crap from any coaches about any calls, you got it?” The game goes off without any problems.
Early in Game 1, “MrT” makes a call under the basket and I clearly hear him loudly say, “over the back.” I’m guessing he must have done that for the crowd, as this is a seasoned veteran. Still, why do that? Dumb IMO. Everyone in the gym could see it was “over the back” (push).
Late in one of the boys games, 2 players check in during a 30 second TO. They did it before the first buzzer. It’s late in a close game and the checked in boys turn from the table to go join their team huddle. “MrT” holds them up and tells them they have to go back and wait at the table. He prevents them from joining their huddle where the coach is talking game strategy. Then after several second, he evidently realizes something and changes his mind, allowing them to join their huddle. Too late, TO is over and coach doesn’t have time to repeat his self.
During one of the Boys games, immediately after a block call is made, and as the players are taking their spots along the lane, “MrT” tweets, walks across the court to the edge of the stands, points at some guy 10-12 rows up and says, “You’re out of here.” The guy hesitates a moment and MrT, says “You won’t be staying for the rest of this game and you need to leave the gym now.” Without any comment or protest, the fan stands up and makes his way down to the floor, walks to the edge of the bleachers and turns the corner to go hit the door. As he was walking away from the court the 10-12 steps to the door, MrT actually waves at the guy and says loudly enough for everyone to hear, “Goodbye, enjoy your evening.” Aside from the unprofessional conduct, I thought someone else was supposed to do that. My AD had actually called me the day before and asked if I’d be our team’s Administrative Representative. I’d never done that before and she explained that in the unlikely event one of our fans needed to be warned, or asked to leave, that it would be up to me to handle that at the game official’s request. But “MrT” just cowboy’d up and did it his self.
During this same game “MrT” called an ordinary block foul on a kid. The boy he called the foul on ended up with the ball. “MrT” extends his hands out in front of his self and says, “ball.” The kid underhand tosses it directly at his hands. “TWEET!” “MrT” whacked him. I am sitting right behind this kid’s bench, 2 rows behind the HC (nobody is seated in 1st row) As he approaches the table to report the T, HC asks for an explanation. “MrT” says, “He threw me the ball disrespectfully Coach.” HC asks, “Did he throw it too hard?” Same response, “Coach, he threw me the ball in a disrespectful way.” End of discussion.
A couple minutes later during stop in play, same HC asks a different official who had approached the table, “I want to know what he did to get the T.” The official asks, “Coach, do you want to have a problem?” HC actually says flatly with no anger or ‘tude, “Yeah, I want to have a problem.” TWEET! Whacked him. That one was funny. He deserved it. But it was so mild that he didn’t even get seat belted, which I though was automatic with the T. This HC behaves his self the rest of the game.
Late in the same game, “MrT” pauses briefly and tells the coach who had the problem waaaaaay earlier, “You need to sit down and stay there.” I thought this was odd, as the veteran referee who had actually whacked this Coach had not made him sit. Seemed completely out of the blue, Coach was just coaching, wasn’t stepping in bounds, wasn’t saying jack to the referees.
I really liked the 3 man crews. I wish all our games were 3 man.
Our girls won, they play in the championship game tomorrow against a team who beat them twice already (close games) this season. That team starts 5 seniors. We start 1 senior, 2 juniors, a soph, and one frosh. We are more talented, but those 5 seniors play like women, and we still play like girls.
