What is the best?

What is the best line you have heard from the Spectators in the crowd? Mine was at regionals when the whole pep club yelled- hey (insert name here) go back to Foot Locker! I had to chuckle a little bit and the Pep Club thought it was hilarious. My partners that it was one of the funniest things they have ever heard.

Any way I was wondering if you guys had any good one liners?:D

Nope - nothing funny ever happens in my games.

Two best

Two come to mind, one by the late Jim Valvano to an ACC official:

JV: Can you T me up for what I'm thinking?
Ref: No, Coach you're safe on that.
JV: Good, cause I think you suck.

Ref advised that it was such a good line he let it go.

Second was in a game Oklahoma was playing back when Billy Tubbs was the coach. Refs had a couple of calls that went against Oklahoma and were showering the floor with cups, ice, etc. Tubbs was requested to get on the PA system to ask the fans to stop. He obliged by stating the following: "Don't throw stuff on the floor, NO MATTER HOW BAD THE REFEREES ARE!"

These refs were not as amused and rewarded Billy with a T.

I agree, these two are the best. Thanks for reminding us. Let's hope that we don't have any coaches on the Forum tonight. These might give them some ideas, and I've got three more games this week.

V Coach asked me to watch for players in the lane. About three trips down the floor later, I called a 3 second violation on his player. As we made our way back to the other end of the floor (in front of V bench) I heard a fan behind me say,

"You call 3 seconds down there, and this guy is pitching a tent, starting a campfire and the squirrel is half cooked!"

I chuckled to myself and continued refereeing.

It's a great wind-up, he gets the fast ball right down the center of the plate, who's going to belt it out of the park?!?!

"You're killin' me Smalls"

It's not original, but the fact they referenced one of my favorite movies gives them points

I heard two this year coming from the student section after what they perceived to be dubious calls from the varsity crew I was watching:

Take his whistle! (sung/clapped to in the same rhythm as the "Overrated" chant)

and my kid's favorite:

I'm blind! I'm deaf! I wanna be a ref!

Geesh......'go back to foot locker' has to be 20 years old. Maybe that's when you heard it.

I do like "Hey Ref, I found your cell phone. It says.. Missed 10 calls":D

Great reply: "I don't have a cell phone. It must be yours."

Of course, it is much better to ignore the fan. In some cases, that is not possible. http://www.neksports.net/Articles-c-...h_Country.html

I wear glasses, but use contact lenses for officiating.

After showering and changing clothes following a game, I had taken out my contacts in the locker room and put my glasses on before departing. As we were exiting the school, we walked past some parents waiting to pick up their kids and one of the mothers said, "Oh, NOW he puts on his glasses!" :D

Even I thought that was funny. ;)

TrojanHorse Thu Feb 19, 2009 03:10pm

I used to work with an official who would officiate mid school games with his glasses on the first half, and is contacts on the second or vice versa.

I can remember in a game I called, where a dad was yelling at his kid, Get our of the lane son...and the kid shouts back, I am on defense dad!!! Everyone heard, really funny.

Or, "Yea, I missed 10 phone calls, so I could pay attention to the calls on the court!"

Wow, maybe the guy who wrote the article is also a referee:

a North Country fan was tossed from the game for heckling the referees. The man's relentless badgering of one referee in particular led to his rightful ejection late in the third quarter. His behavior was an embarrassment - particularly in a high school setting - and was a shame given the clean play on the floor.

FBullock Fri Feb 20, 2009 01:02pm

I had a guy yell at me that I needed glasses. Later in the game, I had an out of bounds play during a time out that was to be put in bounds in front of him. I made it a point to let him know that I heard him but that I didn't need glasses because I had already had Lasik surgery. Didn't hear much out of him the rest of the evening.

:p
