tech foul

Is it a tech foul for slappping the backboard if you think it is on
purpose to try and block a shot.

No. If it is part of a legitimate shot block attempt, it is not a technical foul.

You need to decide whether it was on purpose or was an attempt to block the shot. I don't think it can be both.

Who You Gonna Call ??? Mythbusters ...

Slapping the backboard is neither basket interference nor is it goaltending and points cannot be awarded. A player who strikes a backboard, during a tap, or a try, so forcefully that it cannot be ignored because it is an attempt to draw attention to the player, or a means of venting frustration, may be assessed a technical foul. When a player simply attempts to block a shot and accidentally slaps the backboard it is neither a violation nor is it a technical foul.

I wish coaches would get a clue as to this rule. I have grown tired of all the complaining about this particular situation. C'mon, how hard is this call??? (And this is not a knock against officials . . .)
