A Week Of Firsts ...

It took twenty-eight years, but I finally called this violation for the first time, ever. A player didn't realize how close to the baseline he was and shot the ball straight up, into, and through the net and rim.

RULE 9 SECTION 4 TRAVEL, KICK, FIST
A player shall not travel with the ball, as in 4-44, intentionally kick it, as in 4-29, strike it with the fist or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from below.

And last night my partner called another violation that I had never seen called before. During an inbounds situation, the throwin player handed, not passed, the ball to a teammate inbounds.

RULE 9 SECTION 2 THROW-IN PROVISIONS
ART. 2: The ball shall be passed by the thrower directly into the court from out-of-bounds so it touches or is touched by another player (inbounds or out of bounds) on the court before going out of bounds untouched.

I think that the only call left for me as a "first" is a multiple foul?

Saw the fist the other night, and would have called it if I'd been in position. I'm C, ball heading OOB by lead. A1 leaps OOB and before landing hits it with her fist to give it enough force to go back inbounds. It was OOB anyway, but I told her on the way down that it was against the rules to do it like that.

You've got the "false double foul" under your belt? Guess with all your yrs of reffing........

I called my first double foul a few weeks back. As discussed, it really cleaned up the banging under the boards between the two offending parties. Never had to discuss rough play with either player again. I don't think anyone in the gym had seen that call before (including the guy who called it).

Doesn't take long; they happen all the time.

You mean the violation of a player striking the ball with the fist? :D

Note the smiley face.

Yes, that's what I mean. Thanks for asking.
