2 man crew

working a boys jv game. team A is up by two with 3 seconds to go in game. team B has endline throwin after a team A freethrow. B1 throws a bullet pass to B2 who is standing on sideline right in front of his bench (3/4 court pass). I'm the lead who is on the opposite side of floor at half court as team A is pressing. so when last second shot was taken i was on opposite side of floor and partner was just barely off the baseline. shot was taken in time buit not made. it was contested with some minimal contact down low. anybody got any suggestions how we could of got a closer look

Well, Mr. Bater at least added some punctuation this time. "Could of" still cracks me up every time, though.

All I can say is start at half court no matter what with your peripheral vision on all players near the center of the court and FC area. Then call what you see and make sure you do not guess on anything on the last second shot. You might have to help your partner or make the call based on the things you have talked about before this play took place.

Peace

Could Of, Should Of, Would Of ???

If you're sure that this is the last shot - then as soon as I see the ball airborne, I think you can make that quick jaunt to the mid-court circle to rule on the play, so long as you will not get into anybody's way trying to play defense. It's better to be 25' away than 50'. You do have about 2 seconds while the ball is airborne. (Maybe 1 if the pass is a bullet.)

In a 2 person game with 3 seconds left, if I'm the lead, I'm going to be closer to the free throw line extended or around where the 28 foot line was (is) rather than the division line. With or without a good angle, I want to be closer to where a good shot can be taken. Division line shots are so low percentage, any foul has just got to be very obvious.

Trail does not have to take the final shot.

I always pregame and we always talk about last secons shots. In my games if under three (2.9 or less) (or three with no tenths) ....lead has shots from front court-trail has shots from backcourt.

Why would you expect the lead to get all the way down the floor... and cover the shots... Lead can be standing right there.... You know that in this situation ball gets thrown and shot is going off...

I agree with this (except I explain it as "if we're all in the same half-court, then the T has the last shot; if we're not, then the official in the same half-court as the shot has the shot.")

I think the OP was asking, though, how can an official get a better look at the play to determine if there was a foul? And, other than moving as best as you can, there's no good way -- the play is too spread out to cover completely with two officials.

If that's the question, then I would emphasize angle over distance. Try to get an official in position to observe the space between the shooter and the defender.
