Over and Back

This is probably a really stupid post but I need to get some clarification. The guy I work with regularly in two different games has called an Over and Back violation. The player had one foot over the line. Picked up his dribble. He then picked up his front foot and put it back down behind the half court line. Is this really over and back? Does the player get to do this because he has not established the "three points" of both feet and ball over the half court line? Both time the coach complained that his player had not established the "three points". I cannot find any real good explanation in the NFHS rulebook.

Can somebody help me out here?

Thanks

A quick search of the forum would have yielded your answer.

3 points applies only to a dribbler. If a player straddling the division line picks up his dribbler, he is a player in the backcourt.

If he subsequently picks up his BC foot, then he is a player in the FC (and the ball gains FC status).

If he then puts the foot back down in the BC, he has returned to the BC and thereby violated.

If that's what your partner called, then he is correct.

Your dribbler's status when he picked up the ball: in the back court.
Your player holding the ball's status when he shifted his FRONT foot into the back court: in the back court.
As you have described it, this is not a violation.
