We do that too, but that is done to signify we are coming up on a last second shot. And we signify who has it at the time of the signal. In other words, we do not want officials to be surprised they have the shot.

I always tell my partner that if he (or she) sees me counting with my shoes off, it means there's more than 10 players on the court.

So..., isn't it aggravating when you are administering a throw-in and you look to a partner, who's looking at his shoes ?

I used a football mechanic the other night, but it had nothing to do with player counts. The clock operator wasn't paying attention and had already missed starting the clock once or twice. Finally, in a 4th quarter throw in, the clock didn't start, I noticed it, then gave my Football Referee wind the clock signal. One of my partners, a football ref himself, told me later he lost it seeing that.

Alot of guys around here do that, too. Some tap the wrist where a watch would be and tap their chest to indicate I've got last shot. That's what I tend to do most often.I've never seen the fist, but I do the nod or nod and point to signal ready every time.

I tap my chest with my hand when I'm T the first time I notice the clock under a minute. If I'm L I'll usually hold a fist up at about head level for a second to remind my partner if he doesn't indicate something to me first.
