Coaches are like wives - can't live with them, can't shoot 'em.
(Sorry, BITS - I hope I didn't use one of your lines from the article...)

This was right after the LeBron James crab dribble nonsense.
BJV game where a player from the home team dribbles down the middle of the lane, and attempts a lay-up and is fouled. Player didn't even come close to traveling yet the coach for the visit team is beside himself. Coach: "You can't let him do that. You can't crab dribble!" Me: Guess it was only a matter of time. |

Several years ago a charter school opened, with classes only through 8th grade. I was sent to officiate one of their first games ever, which was played in a church gymnasium. I was talking to the guy who was to be the timer for the night, and he asked, "How many fouls before they shoot free throws?" I said bonus starts on the seventh. He nodded and said, "OK, so will you tell us when or do we need to keep up with it?"

That would be a step backward in my opinion. I like going tableside also.

Late in the game, a couple of points difference, TO called. I report it and ask again "everything good?" then remind timer to watch us for starting the clock. Timer says, "I think she (book) shorted us a couple of points". OK, let's check the line totals real quick. Turns out the book was only keeping a running score and running fouls, nothing on the individual player lines. I ask her why and she says......................."I thought we only cared about the total score. I don't keep the personal lines because the girls argue about who scored the most points." "Tweet, wanna get away?!?!" |

8th grade game, player bringing the ball up against pressure...straddles the half court line, keeping dribble...goes back into the backcourt....Coach wants to know why I didn't call "back and forth"

Sounds Like A Classic Example Of Back And Forth ???
Me too. Why didn't you call back and forth?

A few nights ago...
VG game. Coach jumps up and comes to halfcourt line to bark at one of my partners. Whack (quick, but I don't have a problem w/ it). He signals the T and walks away. I go over to calm her down and she says, "I promise I didn't call a timeout!" We had to start from scratch. |

BJV a few weeks ago. Coach has been a PITA and is getting no love from us. He also really, really, really wants a 3 second call. Has wanted it all game long. So in a last ditch effort, he has his captain ask me to "please watch the 3 seconds."
I'm afraid I ripped that poor kid a bit of new one. "You're kidding me, right? There are 3.8 seconds left in the game and they've got the ball in their backcourt!"

Do we know this for sure? Has anyone ever tried shooting a coach?
