Where Do You Warm Up?
This is primarily an NBA (NBE) thread with questions, so, turn away now if you don’t want to read it! ;)
Went to the Charlotte Bobcats vs Washington Wizards game last night (stupid Wizards lost at the end after leading the entire game – losers!) Sorry, I digress...... We get there early and everyone is on the court warming up, to include the refs in their “oh so beautiful” off-white jackets with blue stripes – YUK (IMO)! Now, the Wizards are on their half, Bobcats on their half, and right on the middle between the two are the three refs stretching. Squats, lunges, modified jumping jackets, running in place, knee bends, jogging down the sidelines, almost dancing side to side with the blaring music, etc. Now, I guess it shows the fans/players they’re “warming up” just like the other participants. But, it looked odd to me. I have been taught to go onto the court and its business/game face and to have already warmed up. Just curious, does this change as you get higher up? College? Anyone know if this is required by the NBA? Just curious. As I suspect, the NBA grades out their officials pretty thoroughly each game. Last night one official “seemed” to call a disproportionate amount of the game. Now it might have been just me, but, my son noticed it too after I pointed it out. It “appeared” like he called 60% of the fouls/violations, and one guy did very little. Maybe it was just “his night.” It was weird though (especially since at half time of my JV game the other night I asked a V ref for some feedback and he told my partner I was calling too much of the game – maybe I was just sensitive to it). - There were two travelling and one carrying violation! Shocking! - Some other interesting stuff I saw (duh to me I guess) - mechanics: I was not used to/don't use (hitting the head, backing up to show displacment, trip). I also didn't realize the teams were opposite their benches (not in front of their benches like HS in the 2nd half). And players.....the end of the benches were way off the court! The players on the injured list were in the second row behind the bench or off the endline. - I really watched the refs hard especially the two that had their electronic devices on their belts - to chop the clock I suppose? All in all an enjoyable, albiet expensive night...... |

Why don't we get to stretch???
On a more serious note, I do not like the fact that we are expected to act like coaches in pre-game (standing basically still and watching one of the teams warm-up for 15 - 20 minutes) after stretching BEFORE we get out on the court. We are then expected to be able to run with the players (who have been warming up and getting loose while we STAND for 15 - 20 minutes) as soon as the ball is tossed.
I do sneak in a stretch or two in pre-game, but would like to be able to continue to get loose while watching the teams warm-up. I cannot recall ever seeing a basketball official warming up and continuing to stretch while teams warm-up. On the other hand, I have talked to many a partner who have "tweaked something" just after the opening tip. |

(I don't know what's wrong with me. I woke up this morning, powered up my computer, started posting on my favorite non-porn website, and found myself posting in mbyron (note my title above). I actually have had to look several words in a dictionary to check for spelling, and to see if I actually knew the correct meaning of the word, before posting. I swear that I'm not doing this on purpose. This reminds me of Charles Dickens', "A Christmas Carol", that I read back in seventh grade. Did three ghosts, mbyron Past, mbyron Present, and mbyron Future, come and visit me in a dream last night? Help. I can't stop. Help.) |

I'm considering the run along the sideline deal no matter who doesn't like it... |
Thats why I like NCAA Womens mechanics. On the court at "15:00", off the court at "10:00", back out at "3:00" without coats. Come out more ready to go. Usually I will go to trainers room and use bike or treadmill.

Section I—Basket/Backboard a. A team’s basket consists of the basket ring and net through which its players try to shoot the ball. The visiting team has the choice of baskets for the first half. The basket selected by the visiting team when it first enters onto the court shall be its basket for the first half. |

Who cares if teams/coaches see you "warming up?" It's stupid to be concerned of such a thing. If you want to warm up 2-3 minutes before tip-off, then do it. Our health is important and if I could use a stretch/run for 60 seconds, then I do it.
Edit: reminds me of when I went to camp and I was told if I need to reset the clock, to always put up an odd number of seconds. Complete pile of cow patties. I put up what I know. |

I had a college game earlier in the season with a guy who works a ton of D1 and was injured last year. He told me he has basically decided he isn't going to run hard until he is warmed up good.
For me, warming up by running is just as if not more important than stretching. I will not stretch before I run so I'm looking for a hallway or somewhere to run. I'm not against an official stretching or running on the sideline because it is an athletic even. I don't normally do it because I'm almost sweating by the time I warm up good. |
warm-up
the issue is mainly with NFHS they say not to warm up stand like a statue. but you can take some time to get lose prior to that and it will not be quite as bad.
with NCAA it is a little different with Men's someone has to be on the floor from I think it's the 15 minute mark as long as the teams are out there, so a couple of you can go back in an stretch a little and come back out, if you are nice you let the rookie get a couple of minutes to warm up also. However in both Mens and Women you are required to be there 90 minutes before the game so some of that time can be spent stretching and getting warm so that you only need a few minutes to revive that before the game starts. With the women, coming out at 15 and oing your admin stuff and then going back in gives you a couple of minutes to get some last minute stretching and warm up in before the toss goes up. If you get good and lose before you go out the 10 minutes of little to know movement should not cause you too much of a problem if you are really stretched out. |

Like I said earlier I'm thinking of doing the run along the sidelines thing before tip off, no matter what NFHS says. |
