Snowy day in Chicago, slow work day............only good news, our governor's impeachment.

I have a boy's varsity I'm looking forward to.

Who else is on tonight?

JBleach85 Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:33pm

I got JV Boys game and then dinner followed by sleep somewhere in my house.

Ah yes Chicago in winter time is lovely isn't it? Recall two Tuesdays in early Dec when there were consecutive snow storms I had back to back 3 hr commutes to games...probably another 3hr jaunt tonight to my game...

tjones1 Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:35pm

All is clear in the southern part of our state. There shouldn't be a problem getting my game in tonight.

slow whistle Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:36pm

Not sure where you IL guys are, but Lake Cook Road is my nemesis...everytime I see it I think of "A Christmas Story" and the old man battling the furnace...

OHBBREF Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:44pm

Off tonight due to cancellation

NJCAA women in Dayton tomorrow afternoon

that Chicago snow is loking like it is headed here thanks!

Freddy Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:47pm

Global Warming

Here in our little corner of SW Michigan, we get our lake effect snow from the hot air emitting from the politicians in Chicago :D. Once it comes off the lake, we get dumped on. About 8 inches since this morning so far.
It just stopped snowing, but is expected to resume soon. No schools have cancelled evening events at this time. I hope our games are on. I'm getting tired of watching Law and Order reruns that I've seen before.

Rich Fri Jan 09, 2009 01:49pm

Boys varsity 3-person tonight. Looking forward to it. Don't have to drive too far (about 25 miles one way).

Spoke Too Soon

Drat. Double Drat. Nice big-school F/JV doubleheader tonight. They just called to cancel .
Or maybe they just found out they were getting me and told me that to blow me off while my partners do a couple of two-man games.

Scrapper1 Fri Jan 09, 2009 02:16pm

Rare Friday night off for me. I had a good BV last night, though. Home up by 18 with 6 minutes left. Wouldn't you know, we ended up in OT. Home team pulled it out. I have a D3 tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait to drive the Mass Pike in a blizzard!

Mark Padgett Fri Jan 09, 2009 02:25pm

As someone who grew up in Chicago, I can tell you I don't miss the snow at all. However, it snowed here in Portland on about 12 different days this winter already. That's usually about how many snow days we get in 18 years (not kidding - normal is about 2 days every 3 years). Fortunately, the weather forecasters think we're done for this winter. Yeah - they've been so accurate so far.

BTW - we might get some more rain. :D

Eckley Fri Jan 09, 2009 02:27pm

I have Boys MS tonight - 7th and 8th grade with two coaches who chirp BIG TIME. One chirper loves to shout "And one!" everytime a player of his makes an attempt below the free throw line. I like the guy I'm working with, though, and I think we'll have fun.

grunewar Fri Jan 09, 2009 02:36pm

I have a FB/JVB set tonight.

Great game last night! Down to the buzzer! Two forth quarter intentional fouls (some of the easiest calls I've ever made) and a T after a foul on a 3-point shot, for the ole yanking the shirt out of the pants (5 shots and the ball).

PS - Coach asked me, what did he say, "I said, coach, he yanked his shirt completely out of his pants - automatic T." Coach looked at the player and said, "That's the second time in two weeks." After the game, coach said, "Man, I had him do 25 laps last time." Wonder what he has in store this time.......

Big time chirpers in a MS game  Wish I could work THAT game with you!

As far as "and one" goes, "sorry coach I only wear Nike."

A Pennsylvania Coach Fri Jan 09, 2009 02:48pm

Tripleheader for me. JH Varsity (aka freshman) boys at 4, JH JV (aka 8th grade) at 5, HS JV at 6:30. School 5 miles from my house, which is nice. $121 cha-ching!

Three youth games tomorrow, almost certain to be cancelled by storm moving through the Northeast.

Lake County, IL

Oh the memories of Chicago snow storms and the games go on....

My worst one, I worked just west of OHare and had a game at Warren Twp in Gurnee at 7pm. I left the office at 3 pm for a 40 mile drive. I just made tip off at 7:10 due to the Sophmore game going long. Big wreck at Lake Cook road and again at Rt 60.

I don't miss the traffic one bit but do miss the Cubs!

M&M Guy Fri Jan 09, 2009 03:38pm

I've actually got a rare, Fri. evening girl's game with a team from the Chicago area. The weather's fine down here in central IL; I hope the other team makes it down here.

Yes, Grune, can you elaborate on this auto-T situation?

zm1283 Fri Jan 09, 2009 04:01pm

One boys freshman game tonight. Good thing is that we make game fee + $15 if we work a single game. Add mileage and it'll be over $70 for one game.

Three freshman boys tournament games tomorrow.

Really! When's the last time the White Sox won the World Series. When's the last time anyone on the Cubs could even spell World Series?

I'll be going opposite direction tonight, live/work in Gurnee (basically), going to Schaumberg..not snowing yet, debating if I should not push my luck and just hit the road now.. I know everyone thinks they have the worst traffic..I won't say Chicago is the worst, but I will say I pity those who have it worse!

For me, I use Rule 10, Section 3, Art 6 - Disrespectfully addressing or contacting an official or gesturing in such a manner as to indicate resentment.

When I called a foul on this player, for me his actions were a no brainer. He got demonstrative and theatrical and made a scene by yanking out his jersey for everyone in the gym to see. Not in my game. I'd do it again every time. And, as I said before, another official apparently beat me to it as he was T'd up for his same action/reaction to a call he didn't like in another game. He will either learn this is behavior will not be tolerated......or not.

ranjo Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:07pm

Just finished up 2-man Girls V. Good game with two evenly matched teams - score and fouls stayed even until home team broke it open in the 4th period. Visitors only used two TO's in the whole game.

Two games tomorrow - Girls JV in a.m. then 3-man Girls V in the evening.

bigbeardedbryan Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:27pm

I wound up working a boys' JV game alone tonight. First-year AD got his officials mixed up and told the official I was supposed to be working with that he wasn't needed.

Visitors got out of the gate fast and cruised to a 25-point win (and shot at least 70% from the floor in the process). Wound up calling at least 25 fouls all-told--including five on the home team's star player. Neither coach made a peep.

Whoever posted those guidelines for working solo--thank you. I didn't follow them to the letter, but a few specific points made this experience a lot better than it could've been.

refnrev Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:36pm

Central Illinois was beautiful today.... hit just over 50. Had a boys V game. 42degrees when I left the game and drove by the bank in that town. Blow out but easy and fun.

Girls' Varsity, 3-Whistle crew. First time where I was the only male official on the game (not that it matters) kinda cool. Easy game to work. Bought the ladies a drink after we were done :)

Could have worked the Dunbar HS game tonight in Chicago. 5 shot outside, 2 critical.
I'll take the snow.
