Front row fan

Boys F game last night - losing team had two fans there :D - one at mid court very front row - loud and just having a good time most of the game.

2nd half - started chirping at every call - getting louder and louder. As lead I made a OOB call - correct call - giving the ball to his team - he - very loudly and sarcastically kept saying... are your sure its black ball - are you sure its black ball -

I calmly looked over at him and asked him if he would like to stay in the gym...

Felt bad afterword - right or wrong on my part?

Did it work?

Yep - he quieted his efforts on the refs and cheered on his team

Then I've got no problem with it. Normally, I wouldn't address fans. I think the better option is to have game management take care of him; but I certainly wouldn't feel bad about nipping this in the bud and giving him the chance to stay in the stands.

this is also a great time to actually practice on court personality -- from time to time i will chat with fans -- it helps. Usually the best time is inbounds between quarters when you are at the midcourt sideline. I only fear the day when a fan knows my name and I hear that chant -- I think as an official thats about as close to h-e-l-l as I could get. Especially since my name is close to a certain ex-Met whose name chanted sounded very morose.

No sir, it's a brown ball..........

Personally, the way I'm wired and the level of game, I might give a quick, humorous retort. If he remains chippy, then you can make a decision.
