coincidentally

After games last night, partner & I were out the door quickly and on the road. He commented, "I called with _______ last week. I hate going anywhere with him. Had to wait half an hour for him to get dressed before we could leave."

So I take it you guys don't take a shower before you leave?

What if you're going to a restaurant or bar after your game? You go in your stripes?

If we are off the floor by 8:40PM, we're showered, changed, and out the door in the car by 9PM. Good enough for me.

Help yourself move-up

I'm a new official..1st year applicant on my board...the lowest rung of the ladder. At my level I have to hustle up my own JV assignments. 2 weeks before my first JV game, I went to a HS nearby to watch everything the V guys did...including how they were dressed upon arrival at the game site...(business casual). I copied their style....not the style of the two refs working the JV game...who arrived in uniform. While not trying to act "big time" by arriving for a JV game in street clothes (as so far all my P's have), I know it has helped me establish an image with AD's of professionalism. I always keep in mind that I'm new, nobody knows me (AD's, coaches, V guys) so I have to always make sure I make a good impression BEFORE I even step onto the court. Bottom line..it's helped me get some additional JV games this season, comments from AD's to..."call me next year so I can schedule you", have V guys invite me to sit-in on their half time and post game to observe and ask questions.
MS, JH, travel, rec.....dress at home/work...coverup with a pair of plain black windpants, my black ref jacket, ski type jacket over that, get to the gym, (30 min.prior), find a quiet out of the way corner, strip off the ski jacket & windpants (a la superman), change into by game shoes, shove eveything in my black duffel, stash the duffel, stand out of the way and out of sight until I see P arrive. After the game I just reverse the process, making a quick stop in a rest room stall to strip off the stripes, towel off a bit and put on a sweat shirt. Ready for the drive home.
