Behavior Policy: A New Twist

A youth tournament has a new twist on the "code of conduct" that has become the norm so coaches, players and parents know the rules.

The title says it all:
How to get thrown out of the gym

I particularly liked this:
The tournament director is not the board of appeals for any coach or parent who thinks the referees are “the worst I’ve ever seen.” The tournament supports the referees. They make good calls and bad calls. Accept it.

Top 10 Reasons . . .

:)My alma mater, an area Lutheran high school, is normally a shining example of sportsmanship. During visitors' free throws, to cite one example, it's quiet as a library.
:(However, it is not without its two or three bonehead loudmouth fanatic parents and fans.
:DWhen asked to sponsor an ad in the annual program handed out to each attendee, my company submitted this list several years ago as a means to helping some people to learn to shut up. Not sure if they ever published it.

Top Ten Reasons – Why NOT to YELL AT THE REFEREE

•He’s trying to call a fair game; you’ve got favoritism driving your emotions
•He’s probably correct, you’re probably not; live with it, that’s life
•Our players start “playing for the whistle” – not good
•He’s a lot closer to the play than you are; get closer, train to be a ref, or keep quiet
•Our coach knows how to use even “bad reffing” to his advantage; let him coach
•Refs aren’t perfect; and you ain’t got the guts to be a ref, do you?
•It’s antiauthoritarian – a bad lesson for life for our youth
•It doesn’t help us win. Ever.
•“Bad calls” never lose a game; turnovers and missed shots far outnumber them
•“Do everything without complaining” (Philippians 2:14) includes watching the ballgame!

My favorite.

A slight modification and that'd be a nice patch to wear on our shirts:
I'm probably correct, you're probably not

Does IAABO have an official slogan/motto? I think they do now...

Me too. I'm an environmental chemical analyst, and I specialize in waste water, specifically, organic nitrogen analysis. I've got a job as long as people keep flushing. I'm pretty much recession-proof. And, yes, I'm up to date on all my shots.

"One Rule, One Interpretation".

Our local board has expanded that motto: "One Rule Plus One Mechanic Plus One Interpretation Equals The Board Way"

I'd love to have our AD put this in our game day program.
I may add this to my list of favorite bible verses :)

Last year late in the season I posted the following on the bulletin board at our local kids rec league.

MESSAGE TO ALL COACHES

I have spoken with some of you recently about conduct while coaching.
This is to clarify the guidelines that are involved.
We are playing under National Federation of State High School Associations rules. Rule 10-4
deals with the conduct of bench personnel. This means everyone seated
on the team bench including the head coach. The rule reads, in part:
Bench personnel shall not:
a. disrespectfully address an official.
b. attempt to influence an official’s decision.

Penalty: Two free throws plus ball for a division-line throw-in. (technical foul) Note: The second technical foul results in disqualification and ejection.

There is no provision in the rule book for a warning in this rule. In other words, by the letter of the law, the first time a coach yells out a call, the result can legitimately be a technical foul. The second time, this offender is out the door.

A large amount of slack is normally given on this rule, just as it given on many other rules in this league. Let us each do his/her own job, whether it be to coach or to officiate, as we work together toward a common goal, a successful program for our children. This becomes even more important as we enter the tournament, where emotions tend to run even higher. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

Don't know how many read the notice, but nobody said a word about it to me.
