Too many tables seem to think the horn is a *required* part of the sub process. It's to be used to get the official's attention if the official doesn't see the sub.

Like Nevada said, I think it's always supposed to go, but I don't let it affect my officiating. Once or twice a game I'll be thankful for the presence of the horn.

The tables also think they can tell us not to allow a sub cause the person wasn't resting on the X when we summoned them.

I'm happy as long as they at least get the attention of myself or whoever my timer partner is. I don't make a big deal unless it's a coach that thinks they can have players just kneel out of my line of sight and not get anyone's attention, and then wants to know why we aren't signalling ofr a subsitution.

I've also been known to reply to a coach yelling "Sub! Sub! Sub!" without a player checking in, "Bring 'em down, Coach, this isn't volleyball."
