In the paint

What are the colored areas on the side of the lane used for?(where they stand when trying to free throw rebound)

Is it a 3 second violation if your standing in there with the ball?

If they're not in the lane, it's nothing. Those lines are used to separate the players during free throws. They mean nothing if there's no free throw involved.

I assume you mean the area between the FHS/NCAA lane line and the NBA lane line.

To answer your question, not in NFHS/NCAA.

Is it still a violation if you only have 1 foot in the lane?

Yes & to further elaborate, if they pick the one foot up out of the lane & dont place it on the wood outside the lane. They are still in the lane.

No, not those little tiny lines, I ment the white lines on the sides of the yellow. http://www.gtcocalcomp.com/erc/inter..._fullcourt.jpg Are those lines still part of the lane?

You won't see those on most courts. If you do, ignore them. They mean nothing. I think they're an expanded lane for different rule sets; although if that were the case, I'd expect to see the extra three point line for NCAA men as well.

That link has an NBA-sized lane - only the yellow box and the white border touching it are considered the lane in NFHS or NCAA basketball. The additional white lines are for the NBA lane.

Just to reiterate, the lane boundary lines are part of the lane.

Then the lane extends to the wider lines.

Then ignore the lines inside, they are irrelevant.

Also, around here we generally assume high school or NCAA since those are the levels we work. Few of us even follow the NBA. An NBA question is more likely to get NBA answers if you identify it as an NBA question up front.

In fact, in the NBA, you can pretty much ignore all the lines for 3 second violations. It gets called about as often as a travel.
