2nd Half Position

In a 2-person crew, where do the officials stand to observe warmups before the second half? My partner last night said the R. observes the visiting team for both halves; I said he stands opposite the home team bench, observing the visitors in the first half and home team in second half.

My IAABO mechanics manual says:
"When returning to the court, assume pregame warmup positions."

The last NFHS mechanics manual I have (2003-04) says essentially the same thing: "Officials assume the same positions as in pregame to observe the warmups."

So which "position" does this refer to? A physical spot on the court or observing the same team?

Observing the same team.

The rationale for R observing the visitors is that they might need the more experienced official in case some kind of issues arise during warmups.

Varies by area. Do what the big dogs do.

That is the way that I was taught. Stick with your team.

And be wary of anyone who tells you to "assume the position". ;)
