Rule change time

We haven't done this for quite a while, so I thought I'd bring it up again. If you could change just one rule in either NF or NCAA, what would it be and why? I'll throw this one out to start. Eliminate 5 second closely guarded counts in any games that have a shot clock. It's redundant.

Ignats75 Mon Dec 15, 2008 03:44pm

Eliminate three seconds. That way the parents will be quiet. :D

Actually, eliminate the fashion police rules. Not my yob man.

dbking Mon Dec 15, 2008 03:54pm

Free throw

Allow non shooters on the lane to enter on release. Now that we have moved them back a spot, it is almost impossible to block out the shooter.

Really? I'm not questioning the possibility of the shooter getting the rebound, but I've not seen this once, since the rule change, where the shooter has "shot the hole" and made it to the basket before the inside players. Has you seen the shooter make it to the basket untouched?

Jump stop

Jump Stop,
It confuses the Traveling violation call and too many officials either do not understand it or just do not call it correctly.

Adam Mon Dec 15, 2008 04:33pm

Same one I always say:
No more timeout requests from the coach.

Oh, and my quixotic arrow issue: flip the arrow as soon as it's at the disposal of the thrower.

IREFU2 Mon Dec 15, 2008 04:35pm

Get rid of the 5 second closely guarded count, except on a held ball within 3 feet.

26 Year Gap Mon Dec 15, 2008 04:37pm

delay in return to the court after a throw-in penalized by a violation call instead of a technical

Amen. In fact, it's worth two. Amen.

Also, just two minor changes in the jump ball rules. First, eliminate the jump ball that starts the game. Second, eliminate the jump ball that starts the extra periods. Flip a coin, like in soccer, and football.

I agree about coaches calling TO.

But my big issue, after taking a year off and now coming back into it "fresh", is the whole "team control or not on a throw-in, and whether or not someone can catch a ball or not after it's been tipped by a teammate or opponent, while she's in the air or straddling the line, etc, etc, etc". Ugh. CLEAN THAT ONE UP!!

But mostly, I wish they'd just leave all the rules the same for a couple of years. Maybe next year?? This year it got down to the darn headband definition, for pete sake. How about let's leave it now? One year with NO RULE CHANGES!?!?

Then we'd hear "We paid all you guys to get together and meet and you didn't DO anything?"

Agree. I've always said, after twenty-eight years of doing this, that the rules are easy to understand, it's the rule changes that make it confusing.

So, you want the NFHS to make a rule that there will be no rule changes? But isn't that in itself a rule change? I still have great memories of that old change in status rule. Can you all hear Barbra Streisand singing in the background?

We start the match with a crumpet toss. And, of course, if someone gets out of line, it's tea time. :p

derwil Mon Dec 15, 2008 09:51pm

In addition to no coaches calling TO's, I'd say ONLY the coach and other players on the bench. No more assistant coaches mumbling about travels under their breath, or standing up "coaching" while the coach is doing the same. Let 'em watch from the second row - then they can do as they please.

Only the head coach can stand if your state has adopted the coaching box

Rule Change

Only a player on the floor able to request a time out.

And complimentary shrimp cocktail after every game.

I would like to see FT lane restrictions end on the release of FT try.

Keep coach power to call time out.

Sit them down. Assistant coaches are not allowed to stand and coach. Deal with it early, as soon as you see them standing.

I think Derwil is suggesting that assistant coaches not even be allowed on the bench. Only the head coach and bench personnel who are eligible to become players would be allowed on the bench.

At least it's a step in the right direction. I suggest no overtimes at all. If the game ends in a tie, the winner is decided by the captains doing rock, paper, scissors.

2 best of 3 or 3 best of 5 or???

My suggestion: male coaching girls basketball should wear a dress.

I'd like to see some of the "fashion police" rules go away... like tights, color of headbands and wristbands. Other than that, no TO from the coach.

I agree that's what he was suggesting, but he was suggesting it to solve a problem that already has a remedy. Since moving to Colorado, I have yet to hear from a single assistant coach during a game (at the high school level). They never stand except during timeouts.

It's not that they're piping off and not getting caught; they just don't do it.

I've had AAU issues, but those were quickly handled.

What year did this rule go out? Didn't this take place if the first OT ended in a tie? or was it after more OT,s. I remember watching some games with sudden death OT but can't recall all the details. Any help? This was in Indiana HS basketball.
