Throw -in....

after made basket Team B inbounds ball, but no one touches it and it goes out of bounds at the other end of court....do we bring it back to spot becuase it wasn't touched?? or only on spot throw ins???

If no one touches the ball within the confines of the playing court, the ball will be put in play from the spot at which it was put in. It will be a spot throw-in for the opposing team.

Who violated? That tells you where the throw in takes place.

Whether a throw-in was from a designated spot or "running the end line" makes no difference. If the throw-in goes OOB untouched, it always goes back to the spot where it was originally thrown. In this case, the spot will be where the inbounder was when he released it, unless he's in the paint.

I think the rule that covers this is 9.2.2:

The ball shall be passed by the thrower directly into the court from out-of-bounds so it touches or is touched by another player (inbounds or out of bounds) on the court before going out of bounds untouched.

And the penalty is:

The ball becomes dead when the violation or technical foul ocurs. Following a violation, the ball is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in at the original throw in spot.

Sure? A1 has the ball for a throwin under his own basket. A1 passes the ball, that hits B1, who is standing on the out of bounds sideline (off the confines of the playing court) near the division line. Where do you inbound the ball, and by the way, whose ball? Maybe I'm just confused by your phrase "within the confines of the playing court"?

I love this play. Until last year, it would have been a throwin at the original spot; regardless of who got the ball.

Yeah, and two unannounced changes later, it's back to the way it should be.

And, just so it is clear, where is it this week? At the spot of the OOB violation where it should be??

If the throw-in pass is caught by a player while that player is standing out of bounds, the ball is awarded to the opponents of the player who caught the ball at the spot where the player caught the ball.

My guess is that it's how it was done by 99% of all referees all along.

BillyMac Tue Dec 09, 2008 09:40pm

Make That 99 and 44/100 % ...

I'm 99% sure that your statement is correct.
