In both options of #1, the Center is told to move back to provide space.
That directive implies that the Center is on the court and cancels a rule-of-thumb that the *Sideline is your Friend*. ;)

That was exactly my thought as well, mick. If I'm already on the sideline, as I normally should be, I'll be in the coach's lap when I back up.

There's nothing wrong with being a step onto the court when in the slot, if the play is on the far side of the court. Officials are often moving regularly anyways, so the C likely isn't there for long.
