Coach says thank you.

Had a HS girls JV/V combo tonight. JV score: 48-1; V game score: High 60s to low 20s. I stopped watching score at 59-19. Losing team is getting frustrated and starts 2nd half rough and slap happy. First drive in 2nd half losing defender puts a hard foul on the shooter. Nothing flagrant or intentional, but hard. I'm L but we have 3 whistles and three arms in the air to send a message. Winning coach calls me over and asks, "Please don't let them get out of control. I've only got 11 players left for the season." "I quietly reply, "We'll keep everyone safe." Late in 4th quarter I'm T in front of his bench. He says where only I can hear, "Thanks for keeping it clean. This could have gotten ugly. I softly reply, "No problem, Coach. " Felt good to get a thanks!

So....did you make some calls at the end to make sure you wouldn't have an overtime?

I confess Padgett. I passed on a couple of fouls at the very end. Please don't tell anyone. Seriously, has anyone else ever done a 48-1 game?

The coach was lying.

Never had a 48-1 game but I was observing a Varsity Girls game where the final score was 85-0.

I don't think you're sending the message you think you're sending.

Early in my officiating career (I think I was a HS freshman) I did a 7th grade
intramural type game that ended 102 - 1.

This was before the three point goal was introduced.

I remember watching a HS girls conference championship game where the final was like 95-20, and that was after it was 60-5 at the half. The winning team was hellbent on getting to 100, but their AD went over and told the coach to chill it out a bit in the 2nd half.

Interesting, I wouldn't ever say this, cause it could backfire. But, it worked for you.

I had one of these a couple of years ago. Very small, rural school playing an even very smaller school. Rabid hometown crowd. Very lopsided score. Home team decided to run the score up and see if they could reach 100. Unfortunately there was no level-headed AD to reel them back in.

At a time out late in the 4th, when the HT was about 95 points, I said to my partner, "They're not getting to a hundred. We'll "find" a travel if we have to." He agreed. Fortunately the last drive of the game, that could have given them 100, the kid did travel.

I got a quiet "thank you" from the VT coach for that.

(Alright, all you purists can commence flaming me now :p)

This statement from the coach would irritate me. First of all, why is he assuming you would let it get out of control in the first place? Secondly, you just called a foul, what else does he want you to do? And thirdly, an official can't prevent a hard foul (possibly injurious) foul from occurring.
