Quick about face

JH 8th grade boys game the other night. 2 very unequally matched teams. B 20 tried to guard a faster guy and ended up accidentally making what would be a great open field tackle on the football field. My partner calls a block. B's coach, who has been chirping all night about ridiculous stuff, wants a charge. Its 20's 5th foul. I inform player and bench. B 20 starts to walk off. Coach says, "Say out on the court" and stares at me. I calmy look at timer and say, "20 seconds. Start the clock." Coach quickly yells at B 20 , get off the court and grabs a sub and yells get in the game." Took about 6 seconds. Quickest change of attitude I've seen in a long time.:)

He has 20 seconds to stare, coach, get the sub in, I don't care. But if that kid isn't in and ready to play at 20 seconds, we'll be shooting some free throws.

The coach shouldn't have time to stare, though. Every disqualifying foul -- notify coach, start clock, notify player. In that order.

I agree. If the coach is acting like an a$$, then enforce the rule strictly - T at 20secs. If the coach is trying to get the player in but it takes 22secs then let it go.

Rule citation that allows an extra 2 seconds?

Hmmm, 10.5.2 Situation B (c) sounds a lot like your situation above.

Because it takes that long for the clock to notify you, for you to react, and for everything else to happen.... if you choose to make it happen that way, because the guy is basically okay, but just being a little slow.

I agree it sounds like Ceaser's situation. And, if I were the NFHS, I'd write it that way too. But, unless your area strcilty enforces the TO timing rules, doesn't allow any "hand slaps" between FTs, uses laser-guided timing devices to whistle 3-seconds, etc., then I'd be inclined to use the CS&FP handbook on this area too.

I had a coach the other night complain that the other team got to huddle without calling a timeout.

We had a foul near the end of the game. Bonus on the other end. I was going trail to lead and the home team stopped in front of the bench. By the time I reported the foul, got the ball from my partner, and was at the baseline on the other end ready to administer the FTs, they had broken the huddle and were just about in position. Nothing odd, except how efficiently they huddled, etc.

I just ignored the coach, but wondered why he was so concerned with everyone else (he was a bit like this the whole game). No delay whatsoever.

OnTopic: It's rare they ever use the full 20 seconds here. Maybe 10 or so. Once the sub is up and at the X, we go.

Would have if he'd been chirping at me, but it was always directed at my P. Didn't whack him then because it would have made him think I was listening or taking him seriously.
