NCAA: Just before half, Game clock 5.(something),Shot clock 2.6. Ball inbounded, shot go up, horn sounds, no rim. I blow whistle for violation. Game clock said .9. I couldn't remember the tenths on the game clock. I put 3 sec. on game clock. Other then the fact I will remember the tenths next time, is this correct and if so how much time would you put on if any. Division II, no monitor.

Hmmm.... Since there was a less than 3 second difference between the game clock and the shot clock to begin with, I'm not sure putting 3 seconds back on the game clock would be right, although you did say there was "point something" after the 5. Still, the game clock doesn't stop at the shot clock horn but at your whistle. For instance, the shot could have just been released when the shot clock buzzer goes, but it would still require some additional time to determine that the ball wasn't going to hit the rim. By the time you hit your whistle, and assuming at least a fraction of a second for the timer to stop the clock, sounds like .9 seconds might not be way off. My inclination would be that, unless you looked immediately at the game clock as you blew your whistle--and thus had definite knowledge of the time--you shouldn't put any additional time on the game clock. Tough to "assume" additional time should be there based on what the shot and game clocks said before putting the ball in play, since the clock could justifiably continue to run until you KNEW the ball missed the rim (not was "about to miss" the rim).

I agree with Todd. The violation occurs on the missed rim, not on the shot. As long as the clock stopped on the whistle, I would leave the time alone.
